anyone else planning thanksgiving yet?
this is our first thanksgiving in our new house, and its also the first thanksgiving we are spending with my family for as long as we've been married (last year we spent thanksgiving with his family out of state). and for some reason I am super excited about it. I am mentally planning what I am making and so far I have fried turkey, mac & cheese made from scratch, bacon and ranch roasted potatoes, baked oysters (YUM!!), green bean casserole, and something for dessert. we should have 6 people over. does this sound like enough food... or maybe too much?

Re: anyone else planning thanksgiving yet?
I think it's never to early to plan a holiday. I'm already rummaging Christmas gift ideas. I think the menu sounds great. The first year that I hosted Thanksgiving I planned a couple of months out and had a burnt yellow and purple theme. I had napkins with purple(dark) napkin rings and put a couple of white feathers in a cute touch and then I had burnt yellow plates from Walmart and I made turkey name tags.
The food should always feel like a buffet since most guest will gorge themselves and then watch football and nap. You will have to share the bacon and ranch potato recipe though it sounds so good.
This is totally a "me" thing, but your Thanksgiving sounds a little heavy (but delicious - SO delicious). As a guest I would want something lighter, like a green veggie or salad that wasn't baked in a creamy sauce.
Otherwise it sounds like plenty of food! (I don't believe in too much, doesn't everyone love Thanksgiving leftovers?)
thanks for the input. it did occur to me that the food is a little heavy. maybe I can sub a green salad or a veggie mix for the oysters. I'm probably the only one that likes them anyway.
I got the bacon and ranch recipe off of kraft.com last year. it was basically taking some red potatoes cut into fourths and coat them in a mixture of ranch sauce and bacon, then bake covered for like 1/2 hour and uncovered for 20 minutes. that's what it is in a nutshell, the actual receipe that I have to dig for has a few more steps than that.
I would LOVE to be planning Thanksgiving. At this time I just hope our DS comes a few days early and we are home from the hospital. Last year we hosted Thanksgiving and we really enjoyed it.
I'm new to the nest so sorry for just jumpin in...but I think you're menu sounsd YUMMY beyond belief!
Luckily we're going up north this year to see my extended family because I think if we stayed in town DH family would volunteer me to host Thanksgiving this year. Our townhouse is just too small to fit everyone!
I started thinking about Thanksgiving as soon as November hit. My husband and I have a very difficult time during the holidays because I come from a doubly divorced family. We decide what we want to do, and (thankfully) our familys plan around that. This year we're spending Thanksgiving in my home town of Fayetteville; lunch with my mom's side of the family, dinner with my dad's side. We'll come home that night and prepare for our crazy Black Friday shopping (we just can't resist!). Then we'll spend Saturday and Sunday with his family, and my step-dad's side of the family. It's crazy, but at this point we're used to it!
PS: We've also already begun talks about what to do for Christmas!
Tea Time for Lulu
We're planning to host Thanksgiving for DH's family this year (our first Thanksgiving as a married couple). I'm sketching out my menu, too, though it's complicated by MIL's gluten intolerance.
Instead of green bean casserole, I'm going to make green beans and toasted almonds. That might be one way to "lighten up" your food selections. You just fry some slivered almonds in a small spoonful of butter until they start browning a bit, and then you dump in a can of French-cut green beans and heat until hot enough.
I'm a bit intimidated by turkey and gravy and all the rest. I'm actually going to cheat where I can-- Pillsbury rolls (MIL can bring rolls for herself if she wants them), possibly a store-bought pie or Libby's and pre-made crust, canned cranberry jelly, maybe even gravy from a jar. Mashed potatoes will be easy. I'm still trying to work out what I should try to make gluten-free, and what I should make in both regular and GF, and what I can make just for the rest of us.
thanks for the suggestion. I may add some corn bread because I make that all the time and H loves pumpin pie (I just learned today).
and to the poster that suggested almonds, its great in theory but I'm allergic
I wish I wasn't because they're so good for you.
turkey for is fried in an oiless fryer. My family has never made turkey and this is the only way I can handle. plus H does all the work. and I am not above using store bought items either. I probably will end up with store bought pie for dessert. I wasn't even planning on gravy...the turkey is so moist we've never needed it.
I'm throwing ideas together right now, but it hasn't been 100% decided that we're hosting this year yet, so I'm trying not to go too far overboard.
After two years ago and all the hassle that a turkey was, we've decided to only do Turkey Breast Roasts from now on. They're delicious, and practically zero cleanup, and you can't even tell the difference between it, except that you don't have any dark meat (which my family isn't crazy about anyway).
Here is my tentative menu, should we host:
Turkey Breast Roast with an Apple Cranberry Chutney
Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
Sage Sausage and Cranberry Stuffing
Butternut Squash
Green Beans with Toasted Almonds and Cranberries
Watergate Salad
Rhodes Dinner Rolls
2 pies for dessert: Pumpkin and Spiced Apple Pear
