Moving to St. Louis ... where to live?

Hi, I'm new to the bored ... technically not married yet, but I may be relocating to St. Louis for a new job and to be with my fiance.

Does anyone have recs for apartments or other places to live? My fiance and I are interested in living in the city as newlyweds and then possibly moving to the suburbs when we are ready to buy a home and have a family.

We are also interested in the industrial loft-style apartment (I'd be moving in first, and then he'd join me when we get married).

Thanks for your help!

Re: Moving to St. Louis ... where to live?

  • Most (not all) of the loft-style apartments are in downtown St. Louis and can be pretty pricey.  Do you know what area the new job will be in?
  • Near Maryland Heights, actually, but my fiance and I are thinking about living downtown for a few years, mainly because he works in Alton and needs to live within an hour of Lambert Airport for work.

What about Cupple Station, those look nice and reasonably priced (the proximity to Busch Stadium is certainly appealing to my fiance).

It's not an absolute requirement to live in a loft-type apartment, it's just a dream we both have.

  • DH and I lived in the central west end for several years before moving out to the suburbs.  We ended up there because we couldn't afford the lofts or the other apartments downtown but it turned out to be a great decision.  The central west end was a great neighborhood.  We moved about a year ago and I still miss the neighborhood.  Just another place to consider...

  • I was born and raised in St. Louis and lived their for 27 years of my 29 years of life.  Downtown St. Louis is not really that great.  It may seem like living downtown in a city seems fun, hip and young, but St. Louis downtown is not like other cities.  It just recently had a redo with Washington Ave. and the loft style living, but overall it is dangerous and there is not much down there besides over-priced bars and boutiques and that is only on Washington Ave.   Other than that most people do not live downtown and only come there to go to sporting events.

I agree with the other girl about the CWE - Central West End.  It is slightly safer, cleaner and more young professional.  Plus it is close to Forest Park and you can get to downtown very easy.  I lived there for 2 years.

Another area that is my fav is Soulard, which is right next to downtown.  It has a "New Orleans" feel to at and the night-life and resturants are great.

  • Let me know if you need any help!!  I do real estate full time and have lived in St. Louis all of my life!  It is a great city.  My email is rjohnson@mygatewayhomes.com
  • Does anyone have any thoughts about Maplewood?  Hubs and I currently live in the city, but we want to start a family and don't particularly want to pay for private schools.  Maplewood is super-close to where we live right now, we love the feel of "downtown" Maplewood, and the school district sounds pretty good.  Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.
