hello! my name is lily and my husband lars and i are increasingly aware and constantly moving toward a more green and clean way of living.
one battle that i just can't seem to win is that of the ziploc bag. : )
#1) what is your favorite storage bag alternative?
#2) do you still use plastic storage bags? if so, do you wash and reuse them?
i wash and reuse but my husband really dislikes washing them (and he does dishes if i cook) so, i'd like to find an alternative product. i don't always like to use tupperware because it takes up a ton of space in our already packed refrigerator.
other ideas?
also, i'd really like to start composting but we're planning to sell our house next spring so i don't know if the time is right to start an outdoor compost bin/pile. i've seen the countertop styles before. how well do they work? do they stink? do you get fruit flies?
please forgive my ignorance on the compost topic. i know there is a science to it and haven't had the chance to investigate further.
Re: introduction and question re: plastic storage bags & countertop composters
Hi there!
I try to limit the amount of bags I have to use, but when I need to use them, my favorites by far are the Green Genius bags for food as well as their trash bags. There's more info at their website thegreengenius.com
I hope that helps!
that does help! we hit up Whole Foods often so i'll pick some up. we'd been buying ziploc because you can get them at costco for so cheap but we're using so much less now that i reuse so it probably doesn't make much since to have 8,000 on hand (no, we don't really have that many but it feels like it!)
Honestly, I just don't use them! But I'm single and have a huge fridge, and don't cook much at all.
I didn't know about these Green Genius bags though! I am going to check these out. It'd be nice to have some food storage bags and I have some friends who use tons... I might have to replace their stock!
Hi there!
Green Genius bags sound great!
If you've got a Kohl's near you, I found a great deal on Pyrex glass containers. They have plastic lids, but they're BPA-free. Not sure about "freezability" of these though.
And I am OBSESSED with re-using yogurt containers, take-out containers...pretty much anything that I don't have to buy that has a lid and is dishwasher-safe.
Pyrex freezes wonderfully. All liquid items we freeze, like big batches of leftover soup go in Pyrex. We use Pyrex for all our storage needs. They stack really well, so they don't take up that much room in the fridge. We just stack up to the top of the shelf
. The only thing we still use plastic bags for is freezing pesto. I make so much of it that we can't afford that many small pyrex bowls.
Hello!
At our house, we use glass in the fridge/freezer (though sometimes meat gets put in ziploc bags when I run out of containers), & for sandwiches & stuff, I made reusable baggies out of cloth (backed with PUL).
We also reuse containers (i.e yogurt, as PP said), but be careful about what you put in the dishwasher!!! We never ever put plastic in the dishwasher or in the microwave....
I've only seen countertop mini-bins (porcelain ones) that are taken out to the bigger pile/container.... can't imagine you could fit much in there for your end product.
Thanks for clarifying, SuperGreen!
