Questions/recommendation requests...

Hi ladies!  My brother is getting married in a few weeks and I just have a couple questions about the weekend.  We have family coming in from out of town, and are trying to figure out something cool to do on a Sunday afternoon (12-5ish).  One option is the Dead Sea Scrolls, but does anyone have other ideas?

The bridal party is getting updos done at the 526 salon (St. Paul), and it's really spendy.  My mom has a short, very "mom" hair cut and would just need it basically styled...so I don't want to make her go there and spend a ton for something so simple.  Any recommendations nearby?  The 526 is on Selby Ave.  ETA: She could also go somewhere in the NW metro since that's where she'll be staying the night before and then meeting us at the other salon.

Side question- the updos are $80.  How much would you tip for that?  I'm at a loss...this is a bit out of my normal price range!

Re: Questions/recommendation requests...

  • I used to do hair - a 20% tip was the norm.  $80 isn't actually too bad of a price for an updo - the salon I worked at and all others that I've been to charge $100 and up for an updo...   You could ask if the salon has a shampoo/style available.  It's usually $5-10 less than a haircut price.  I don't have any suggestions for salons in the area, though.

I'm just from St. Cloud where things like that were a lot cheaper!  That and my hair stylist up there spoils me because I've followed her for 8 years.

  • A shampoo and style is much cheaper there.  Your mom shouldn't have to schedule an updo - and pay the price - if she doesn't need one. When I was looking for a special occasion hair style, 526's prices were pretty comperable or even a little cheaper than other places in that area.

If you want your mom to go somewhere else, Root is a block away and Esthetica is a few blocks away, both on Selby.  Juut is maybe a couple miles or so away on Grand Ave.  There are other places on Grand but I can't think of the names.

  • Thanks ladies.  I actually checked with 526 and the only stylist open charges $50- when originally he said they run $15-$30 for a blow-comb.  I'm just going to find a place near Plymouth!

  • Check out Simonson's in Plymouth (they have a location in Maple Grove as well) for your mom's shampoo/style. And, yes, plan to tip about 20%.
