XP: fall & landscaping chores
Last fall I didn't have too much going on for landscaping here at
home because we had just moved in, but this year is a bit different
LOL. What do you all do with your flower beds this time of year? Cut
everything back? Or leave it? I have marigolds from seeds that are 4
ft tall and sweet potato vine that looks like it was on steroids and
some pathetic looking petunias that got overtaken by the sweet potato
vine.
I'm just a little bbit clueless with this homeowner stuff yet.
Re: XP: fall & landscaping chores
If you have seed heads on your marigolds, you could always harvest those seeds and save them for next year. The petunias, sweet potato vines and marigolds won't survive a hard frost. So, you can either go ahead and rip them all out now, or wait until the frost kills it. I would opt to ripping it all out before the frost kills it.
Also to be done in the fall, bulb planting. If you want to plant tulips, daffodils, crocus, etc. the fall is the time to do so. I do bed prep in the fall too. I clean out weeds, plant pansies for winter color (I'm in zone 7b we have cold winters, but not frigid and very little snow), replace mulch, plant new bulbs, and divide plants (normally my bulbs).
Check your local agriculture extension for an area garden task calendar. They normally have things like that on the websites.
