Please tell me you love this.........

I just bought this for my dining room. Mucho-dinero but I have been staring at it for weeks. I am ditching the former owner's Mexican hacienda furnishings/decor in favor of Americana Funky in my house. Well I am calling it Americana-Industrial. My husband insists that there is no such style............Stick out tongue

I like the folky-ness of it and it will go with my vintage art and painted signs, etc. I also bought this wheel.......

I am also bidding on Ebay for a giant black fork and a sppon to put in the kitchen/breakfast knook.........I should keep quiet so no one jumps in and swoops me!

So gals - tell me I am not crazy and my house isn't going to look like someone with absolutely no design skills (that would be me) decorated it.

Or, tell me I am nuts and should send it BACK!

Re: Please tell me you love this.........

  • I really like the wheel!  I see the American-Industrial theme with the wheel.  Not sure that the fork and spoon go with the wheel, but I'm thinking that you will NOT be hanging them up right next to each other.

I'm not completely sold on the wall art tho.  Maybe it would be more flattering on a bolder colored wall.  And maybe with some additional complimentary textured wall art.  Did that make sense?  Sorry.

Also, were you hanging the wheel and wall art next to each other?  I'm not sure if they compliment each other.

    So that's my $0.02

  • Hey Mia! The wall art thing will be in the dining room. My walls are painted in a terra cotta color.

The wheel will go somewhere. Maybe even outside on my patio...I just like it so I have to fit it somewhere.

And the spoon and fork will be in the breakfast nook.

I am a little nervous about the wall art - it is 50in square! If it looks like crap hubby is going to kill me. I have convinced him it will look great with the dining room table I want from Ikea - the boys can bang their spoons on it and finger paint and mommy won't have a heart attack!

  • I'm not really fond of any of the items. but that could be just because you have the item up and dont really know how the rest of the furniture is going to go?  also the color of the walls and additional decor might balance it all, me personally, it's not my taste but it doesnt mean once it's all up it might not look great!

    GL

  • I like the multicolored wall art, but would have attempted to make it myself rather than buy it. ?Mr. Insomniac would hate it. ?I also like the wheel, and I think he'd like it too. ?The fork and spoon I'm not feeling. ?It seems dangerously close to literal art - you know, signs for KITCHEN in the kitchen - which are a personal pet peeve of mine. ?I can't stand signs that tell me where I am. ?If there's a fridge and a stove, I'll make the assumption that I am in a kitchen. ?I don't need a helpful sign. ?Mr. Insomniac thinks that I'm ridiculous.

Literal art - LMAO! I do hate that stuff, too. But I saw this fork/spoon thing a long time ago and love them. My husband is totally hoping someone swoops me tonight on Ebay. He hates them. Maybe I will let those go...........boo.

I WISH I was crafty enough to make something like that art-thing. I am plaaning on painting my wood gate outside - but it is already in the ground. Once color. That is totally the extent of my crafty-ness. I try to stay away from Michaels as much as possible. I will buy something and try to make it...and it ends up in the trash.

BTW - I showed the pic of the wall art to my twin sister and she said "OOohhhhhI I wanted that so bad but Dh hates it!".

  • Mel - I like your idea of DYI wall art.  Customizing to your likes vs dislikes and choosing your own color scheme.  Having done DYI invitations for a shower that involved stripes and strips of paper, I remember it to be very time consuming...cute, but time consuming.  With that said, I'd weigh the options of buying premade vs DYI...that's just my logic these days.  LOL!

Alisa - I think the wall art will look great offset the terra cotta.  AND, as an extra bonus idea...if the colors don't quite match, I'd consider strategically covering one or a few of the existing stripes with a piece of paper painted the exact same terra cotta color to coordinate with the wall.  No charge.  LOL - I'm so full of myself today!  Sorry!

  • Actually all of those items together makes me think "amish eclectic" (don't ask why, i think the art sort of looks like a quilt) .. it's not my personal style, but I can absolutely imagine how it would all come together and I think it could be fabulous.

then again, my vision for my blue, brown and taupe hawaiiana bedroom didn't work at all, so what do I know?

  • I like them all but that may be because we have the same style! I love the giant spoon and fork!

I think I would make the wall art my self. Go get some wood and stain it different collers that I like and then put it together.

  • I really like the wheel.

The others.. not so much.  But if you have the right furnishings and wall color, those two pieces could really work.

  • I actually don't mind the wall art ... not sure I'd put it in my house but that's me.  It doesn't bother me at all.  The fork and spoon I'm not so sold on ... it kind of doesn't fit in with the rest.  The wheel isn't so bad either.

Keep in mind this is coming from a girl who is moving away from the "French Country" look as we speak.  I just painted my yellow (it was a very pretty yellow) and white walls to a more beige-ish color (it's called Malton by Benjamin Moore) and put this rug down last night:

(hopefully that PIP works!).  I'm currently looking for a mellow entry rug.  My bedroom is tan walls with a red/tan bedspread by Pottery Barn.  My office is red on the bottom and tan on the tops broken by a white chair rail.  So you get the idea ... I'm going the more traditional with a contemporary feel.  The rug is black on the border (mind you I had a flower border pottery barn rug before) so I'm painting my currently light blue bar stools black ... and I have a navy micro suede couch. :)

Hmm... I stole your post! Sorry!!

I love that rug. I love the mellow modern look!  I like the linens from PB. Some of their furniture doesn't hold up well but their textiles are good quality. I got my curtains there.

There is an unfinished furniture store near my house - I need to go look their for some stuff to paint!

  • I actually love the wall art. I think that' actually something I would put up. It's just got a funky, rustic look to it.

I also like the wheel. Do you have a study or library area? The wheel might look really good in that kind of setting.

The fork and spoon are not my style but I think they're kind of neat and quirky. Like PP's said I'm not sure they really go with the other items though.

  • Thanks!  I like the "mellow modern look" comment.  Pretty right on! I have it paired with more traditional stuff.

I'm with you on PB ... nice stuff but sometimes the quality isn't worth the money.  I buy most of it off eBay. :)  I haven't bought anything linens wise except the duvet cover and shams.  The actual sheets aren't PB.  But it's more my style.

    Mellow Modern ... that's what I'm calling it! :)

    ?

Oh, I'm just a cheap bastard. ?I literally have taken pictures of modern art in museums because "I could totally do that". ?Of course, it's actually harder than it looks and I get annoyed and pissed at the results. ?But I really do think I could do the first thing. ?Scraps of wood, paint, nails and a hammer. ?How hard could it be? ?Right? ?lol

I think we should have a DYI wall art contest. ?;)

Scraps of wood, paint, nails and a hammer.  How hard could it be?  Right?  lol

Now we're talkin!!!  I'm totally feelin ya!  Have some wood roughly cut on purpose, exposed nails, glue drops, splattered paint...it's urban rustic.  Ooo!  Did I just make up a new decor scheme?  LOL!

  • I really like all of it. The art work looks like something my uncle makes.
  • I think I like it! Not as big of a fan of the fork/spoon. They are a tad big for me.

But what are you going to do with your gorgeous Mexican angels? Or are you just abandoning the theme for the kitchen?
