So, DH has been AAACTIVELY looking for a new job for a while. His job and his colleagues were supporting one part of an organization for a long time and that org just transitioned to being supported by a completely different desk. Even though they have NO work to do since last monday (he has 2 coworkers), his boss just encourages them to look for a job. If they're getting laid off, it hasn't happened yet.
DH has been interviewing for the last few weeks for a job and yesterday was his final interview. They told him there were 100 qualified candidates, 25 first round interviews, and 5 final interviews. DH came back and sent his e-mail thank yous out right away.
At 5pm, the HR person called and said they wanted to go ahead with next steps on his application process, and could he sign a background release form that she is sending him? He's going to do that first thing this morning.
Then, he checked his e-mail today -- one of the men he wrote a thank you note wrote back: "Congratulations on getting the job!"
Um... okay... I guess he got the job...
Seriously, we're thrilled! It pays less on salary but more on variable comp than his current role, it's still downtown boston (right next to my building now, but moving a few blocks away towards Faneuil Hall in Q1) and seems like a cool place to work. And it's doing work he likes and is good at. It's hard for him to find opportunities like this in Boston, and so we're extremely grateful and lucky!
Re: AW: DH has a new job... we think....
Yay! Good for your DH!!
I used to work in Downtown Crossing, man sometimes I miss the ease of city life. Take the T in, take the T out.

That is so awesome, good for him!!!! His 'previous' boss sounds like a stand up guy.
Question, is there any point in the interview process these days that people still send thank you's via snail mail?? The last time I was interviewing it was for a field position and everyone I interviewed with was extremely scattered across the country it was tough to secure addresses so I e-mailed mine.
Just curious.
DH is not much of a written thank you note person in general, so I don't think i could every convince him to really do that (plus, he has bad handwriting, and I think he'd be self-conscious of what an employer might think of HIM when they see his handwriting). But also, in this case, where it was REALLY competitive to get this job, quicker/immediate was better for him.
I interview a lot of people in HR, and I probably get a handwritten note one out of every 20 candidates. BUT, when I have informational interviews and networking interviews, where there isn't a job they're looking at specifically, that goes up to more like 1 in 3.
