Suggestions on places to stop - Help out an Austin, Texas Nestie

Hello Fellow Nesties!  My husband and I are flying into Portland on October 5th and planning on driving down the coast line and eventually making our way to Seattle.
We would LOVE recommendations on places to stop and places to stay on the coast line between Portland and Seattle.
Thanks SO much!

Re: Suggestions on places to stop - Help out an Austin, Texas Nestie

  • How long of a trip are you planning on?  It's only a 3 hour drive (ish, depending on traffic) from Portland to Seattle.  So you're flying into Portland, then driving over to the coast and straight north to Seattle, or you want to travel south along the coast for a while first and then head north?

From PDX to the coast, the closest town is probabl Tillamook.  That's about a 2 hour drive.  We love to do the cheese factory there, and Blue Heron cheese too.  Garibaldi, the next town over, has a train ride that a lot of people really like.  Moving north, a lot of people love Manzanita, about a 45 minute drive from Tillamook.  It's a small, cute coastal town.  Cannon Beach is one of my favorites, and it's about 20 minutes north of Manzanita.  Cannon Beach has some fun shopping and a lot of great places to stay.

The next main stop for a lot of people is Seaside.  It's a larger, very touristy beach town.  We like it if we're just going for the day and want to have a lot to do.  it's not the most relaxing atmosphere, though in October it will be pretty deserted since everyone is back in school.  It's only about 15 minutes from Cannon Beach to Seaside.

Also near Seaside is Fort Stevens, a must-go for us.  We love to explore the old fort.  They have a campground too, if you're interested, though it's extremely popular and might not have any space.

Astoria is the next major stop heded north, about 25 or 30 minutes from Seaside.  Astoria has a lot of great B&Bs.  Climb the Astor Column when you're there.  Nearby is Fort Clatsop, where Lewis and Clark wintered.  It's a fun place to go!  They have actors there who are dressed in period clothing and do demonstrations and talk to visitors about what it was like for the people who traveled with L&C.  We really like to go there.

I don't know much about the Washington side - sorry!

  • Honestly, I'd just do the Oregon Coast then cut over to I-5 to get to Seattle.  The Road along the OR coast (101) runs right along the coastline for most of the entire coast.  In Washington, it runs inland for a majority of the time.  There are other routes out to the ocean but It would be a LONG drive as they are not highways.

The closest town on the coast to Portland is actually cannon beach about 90 minutes from the city.  The PP offered some great spots in that area and I would also add Ecola State Park in Cannon Beach.  Walk out on the beach to Haystack Rock at low tide and you can see the tidepools.
