XP: Selling wedding dress...questions

So I've made the decision to sell my wedding dress...I should be able to sell it for a good amount and pay off some debt.  I know there's preownedweddingdresses.com, but not sure if anyone has used it/heard of experiences?

I know there is Craigslist, but I'm listing for quite a chunk of cash that I don't know if someone would buy from there if I ask for cash only. It would be alot of cash...

Do you have any recs I haven't thought of? Know of any local consignement stores that sell wedding dresses? It's a high end designer, and I'm a pretty average size so I have hope, but also nervous because I'd ask high price (though it would still be more than half off retail).

  • You can try posting it on the "Trash to Treasure" board and use Paypal for the transaction.  If you're going to do craigslist, I would insist on cash or using Paypal (CC only).  You may also want to try eBay (though you have to pay a listing fee).

    Don't trust anyone's checks!

I wouldn't trust them, either! That's why I don't want to do CL...also, I think they'd be hesitant forking over a couple thousand in cash!

  • There used to be a wedding dress consignment store called Here we go again but I don't think they take wedding dresses anymore. But maybe you could call them and see if they can refer you to another place?
  • I had a friend use preowenedweddingdress.com to sell her dress and things were fine.  I even looked there for a dress when I was shopping around for my dress; although I did end up buying new in the end.  They have a ton of designers and I think a lot of women look there to get designer dresses for a deal.  Good luck!
  • Would you feel comfortable with a cashier's check?  That might be another option for people to pay you.

    Good luck, though!

  • Check out weddingbee.com (I think that's it). I sold several things on their for sale/classifiedr page.

  • I sold my a designer dress in a unique size. I think it listed in once on CL, but didn't get any hits. I think that works best for less expensive, more popular dresses, in common sizes because fewer people are looking there. I thought about the preowned wedding dress site. It seems like people like it, but I didn't want to pay. I also thought about Ebay, but I don't know anything about it.

Anyway, I posted on Weddingbee and created a public webpage though Google Sites or Pages. I completely forgot about it until about 5 months later when someone from the east coast contacted me about it. She said she found it through a google search, but I'm not sure which page she saw. I offered to do paypal with her, but she preferred sending a check in the mail. I told her that I would wait until it cleared before mailing, which she was okay with. I waited three days or something - whatever the bank teller recommended - and then shipped it off. (We made contact originally by email, but we talked on the telephone about payment, which I think lets you get more of a feel for the person).

Tip: Definitely get tracking when you ship! DH dropped it off at the post office for me and only got insurance and delivery confirmation. Naturally, it got hung up somewhere and the poor girl was left feeling scammed. Thankfully I at least had something to prove that I really had shipped it, but we were both holding our breath until it arrived (safe and sound).
