little kids ride motorcycles?

At my 5 year old nieces birthday party, my SIL gifted the birthday girl with all this fox gear for a motorbike. A motorbike she's getting for x-mas! My SIL then mentioned that Ella would get her own when she turned 5. I just cannot imagine allowing Isaac or Ella the right to even think they are allowed on a motorbike. I mean, Isaac still struggles with a regular bike!!!

Am I the only one who thinks is this is completely nuts?

Re: little kids ride motorcycles?

  • Nope! Our neighbor got (with her ex husband) her son a dirtbike (with training wheels) for his 4th birthday last week.  Her boyfriend had to adjust the throttle so it went slower than normal (but it can only be set so low) and I kept thinking "wow ... that's a lot for a 4 year old!"  Her boyfriends daughter has one too that I think she got at around 4 (she's 5 so I'm not sure how long she's had it).  They thought it was great!  I thought it was nuts.

  • I have a certain friend that you know who her family bought her 4 year old nephew one for xmas a few years ago.  It had training wheels.  he freakin loves it of course but I would definitely NOT ever let my child go on one of those things.  But I had a friend who was killed on one at Glamis so I'm totally against it.
  • My ex was and may still be into motorcross, along with lots of his friends.  He started in it around jr high, not sure that any of his friends started even younger than that, and at the young ages of 4 or 5.  IMHO I think 4 or 5 is way too young.  Even a tweenie at 13 or 14 still don't have enough muscle (again IMO) to have the upper hand in managing those machines.

Furthermore, DH's BIL tried getting his boys into it, maybe around the ages of 8 - 9 yo, but neither really got into it.

Lastly, my girls won't be on those things.  Thanks.  And that ends my minisoap box.  LOL!

  • Ugh, this is one of my pet peeves. Totally not age appropriate, and I know of way too many grizzly accidents. Heck, they aren't even that safe for adults, but at least an adult knows better / should be mature enough to understand the risks. A kid just can't comprehend that.
  • Nope, you are not alone.  I think this is nuts also.

  • My husband has been riding dirt bikes since he was 3. We bought my DD a Honda 50cc dirt bike for her 3rd birthday. She grew up being around dirt bikes and was already comfortable with wearing the proper gear and a helmet. Her bike had training wheels and there was a way to limit the speed of the bike. My husband made it just fast enough for him to be able to run along side of her so he could control the bike if needed. She is now 6, almost 7, and has never crashed her bike. She understands the responsibility of the bike and is very cautious when riding. When we go to the desert, my husband will set up an area with the little colored ribbons so she knows her riding limits. My littlest one just turned 3. In October, we will be taking her out and letting her ride her sissy's old bike. If the kids are taught properly, watched correctly, wear all of the proper gear, and have the speed limited on the bike, I don't see any problem with allowing them to ride dirt bikes. I would honestly base it on the nature of the kid and how well they listen and understand. If they are a "wild child" and tend not to listen, then I would say no and to hold off until they can handle the responsibility. That goes for dirt bikes or bicycles in my opinion. I am sure I am going to get reamed on here for allowing a 3 year old to ride a dirt bike but when you can run faster than the top speed of the bike, I don't see that as being a problem.
