Basic shoe-matching question

If I wear a navy dress or suit, I generally match it with navy or black shoes.  A friend of mine told me I should only wear brown with navy.  Then a FB friend posted that she avoids buying navy outfits because she doesn't know what kind of shoes to wear with it.  She tried cordovan and people acted as if they had never seen such novelties before.

So tell me, oh wise CN, what color shoes do you wear with navy suits/dresses?

I generally dislike navy, but I think brown or black is fine.  I think taupe looks nice.

Fallin, talk to me like a 2 year old.  Are you saying you dislike navy in general, or you dislike navy shoes with navy clothes?

I'm not a huge fan of navy shoes, but I figure as long as they don't clash, no one can say I was mismatched that way.

Navy is a neutral. I wear whatever I damned well please. I never wear navy with navy because it's difficult to match.

I have a navy dress I bought on etsy that I adore. I recently wore it with a pair of blush heels. I have another navy dress from jcrew that I wear red with. Depending on my mood, where I'm wearing it, etc, I could do gray or yellow as well. Black or brown are fine but I like shoes with color.

I also consider navy a neutral. I will wear any shoe color with it except red or white because I don't want to look too sailory

Yellow-green is nice for spring/summer.  How about a multicolor shoe, like a plaid or floral?

I love navy.  I tend to do brown with it.  I think camel/caramel color brown works best with navy.
