green cleaning products

Hey guys, any advise on green cleaning products? I've seen a lot on Mrs. Myers, Dr. Bronners, Seventh Generation, and Clorox Green Works. I also know people use water and vinegar. What do you recomend? For the house, I just want some soild stuff that'll take care of day-to-day grime. But also, if any of you have any suggestions, I work at a doctor's office and would like something to use there also. I'm worried about green products not being powerful enough to tackle the patient's illness germs... thanks!

  • I have some recipes listed here - it also has a link to the Vinegar Institute, which will likely have more info about germ effectiveness for the doctor's office!

  • Essentials are white distilled vinegar, a BIG box of baking soda, water (of course), salt, and I also keep Borax around. You'd be surprised how many different combinations you can make; I'm sure you can google them or find something that works for your needs. Certain in-store brands are greener than others, so just read the labels. I've been liking Babyganics brand, which I get at Babies R Us. HTH!

  • Because of my blog I've had the opportunity to try different brands and compare them.  My two favorite are Seventh Generation and Simple Green Naturals.  I use a combo of these two mostly.  But for different things... like for Seventh Gen I love their Multi-Purpose cleaner and fabric softener and for Simple Green Naturals I like their carpet cleaner (it's going to save my apartment deposit!) and glass cleaner.

I've made my own as well and I just use vinegar and water for small things like day to day cleaning.  I pull out the brands for heavy cleaning and big messes.

  • We use a combo of homemade and store bought. For store bought we use Gloves Off which is certified by Health Canada to get rid of H1N1 etc etc.
  • I use different things for different jobs around the house. I have ECOS laundry detergent that I found at Sam's Club for an awesome price. It doesn't seem to be doing as great of a job as the previous Method brand detergent that I have used. I will probably switch back to Method detergent when my bottle runs out of ECOS. I have also tried and like the Mrs. Meyers laundry detergent.

I really like the Method brand daily shower spray for preventing soap scum and then I use the same brand for deep cleaning the showers/sinks/toilets and also around the kitchen. I use Method brand window cleaner, hand soap and recommend both of them as well.

I use Seventh Generation dishwasher detergent.

For our floors, which are tile and laminant, I use a mixture of vinegar and water and a machine washable cloth.
