My mom and dad divorced when I was 3, she hasn't seen anyone on my dad's side of the family since about then.
She had my dad's nephew call looking for a job at the company she manages. He told the receptionist he was my mom's nephew. She didn't bother returning the call, they weren't hiring, and he doesn't have a driver's license.
Now one of her clients just called asking for a reference on him because he's applied to work as a caretaker with his girlfriend at this clients property. He touted himself as 'my mom's nephew', somehow he knew my mom had connections to the property.
Really??? It seems weird to me that someone who hasn't seen my mom since he was probably around the age of 10 is handing out her name as a reference. Seems like it could backfire too, because now she's going to call this property and explain that she can't be a reference, she doesn't know him...
Re: Kind of annoying...
Wow, he must assume your mom will vouch for him. I hope she is truthful that she doesn't know him except maybe once when he was 10!!
This reminds me of the "odd reference" checking I did on a guy. He put a reference down and never bothered to say it was his MOTHER! I call and one question is always, "how do you know X." She's like, "he's my son!" I was so, so shocked but managed to get good information out of her that confirmed he wasn't a good fit for our company and the exact job he wanted AND managed to confirm he was lying through his teeth to us on when he was available.
Yeah, I would be shocked if I was the reference checker too. Who lists a reference they haven't had any contact with in 23 years?!?!?
I have a friend who has listed her mom as a reference several times, even though they have not ever worked together and have no professional relationship. I always question her about it, and she says that no one will know it's her mom because they have different last names (parents are divorced, mom remarried and has second H's last name). I keep telling her that people will still know it's her mom unless her mom lies, because references are always asked what their relationship to the job applicant is, and since she hasn't worked with her mom, their only relationship is mother/daughter. I think it looks really weird. I would never list a relative as a job reference, especially if there is no professional relationship.
