Rec your mattress

So we're thinking it's time to break down and replace old crappy cheap mattress with a good supportive one.  I pulled a rib out of place this week, and have been waking up in the middle of the night in tears - the mattress is not helping with the healing, and we were hoping to replace it soon anyway.

Can you tell me what you have, and do you love it?

Re: Rec your mattress

  • Ours is a Sealy but I don't know the specific kind. It was in the mid-range at Macy's (not the cheapest, but not anywhere close to the reallyreally expensive ones). We got a hotel collection mattress topper and it is HEAVENLY as a combination. Sometimes we say that we need to get rid of it because we can never get out of bed for work. So so sooo worth the money.

p.s. Columbus Day is coming up and Macy's always has great mattress sales around that time, so I would wait until then - ours was half off!

  • We have a Serta Perfect Sleeper Espiranza (or something like that) that we bought at Macys, and we love it. It's a cushion firm pillowtop. We spent a lot of time shopping when we bought our new bed. Some tips:

-Each mattress store carries its own mattresses - Macys was the only one to have the Espiranza, the Sertas at Sleepy's aren't sold anywhere else, etc.  But, they will for example have a nearly identical mattress to the Espiranza at Sleepy's - just called something different like Serta Perfect Sleeper ABC mattress. I assume this is to prevent price shopping.

-Mattresses are very subjective. Spend a lot of time laying flat, on your side, etc. on any mattress you like. Just because I love my mattress doesn't mean you would, we like ours on the firm side.

-I had one of the WORST shopping experiences of my life when we went to Sleepy's - super pushy, slimy salesman, no prices on anything and the price he told us just happened to be exactly what we said we wanted to spend, he only showed us the most expensive mattresses and then tried to push them on us even though we didn't like them, etc.  DH and I still joke about it.  Of course it's a chain so it may just have been that store.  We had a great experience at Macys. When they're having a sale (they usually are) their prices can't be beat, especially if you have a Macys card to get an additional % off.  Using my card I was also able to get 6 months interest free financing, so I could pay it off over time and didn't have to open a new credit account.

  • You can get opinions 'til the cows come home, but you really just need to test out a bunch of mattresses. Find out where the best deals are and who's having a sale, then make yourself comfortable.

H and I went shopping for a mattress at Haynes a while ago (we did not buy, because they were scum, the people, not the mattresses) but they had someone there who explained this:

When you lay on a mattress on your back your body should be in a straight line from head to hips to feet. If it sags around your hips or back, it's not supporting you and won't be comfortable. You and your H might need different levels of support, too, so you'll really need to make sure you find something suitable for both. You both may also have different sleep styles (back, stomach, side) and you'll need to lie on the mattress how you sleep normally and see how it supports you. And we noticed that it really did come down to price. The more expensive, better quality, was more comfortable. If you try to go cheap you'll probably regret it.

And yes, you need a supportive box spring. If yours in still in good shape you probably don't need a new one, but a lot of times it's cheaper to buy a set than just a mattress, which doesn't really make sense, but whatever.

Try to save on a frame. If you have a good one, don't buy a new one, but if you need one you can save $40-60 by asking them to throw one in for free. I did this a long time ago when someone tried to sell me a frame and I told them I could find one somewhere else for $15, they gave me one for free.

     Happy shopping!

  • Thanks for the input - after many hours of mattress shopping (who knew laying around could be so exhausting??!!), we found the perfect mattress.

I knew that the actual feel of the mattress would be pretty individual, but we wanted to hear a little about reliability.  We knew we'd be spending a lot of money on this, and would be spending 1/3 of our lives in this thing!!  Such a hard decision:)

Anyway, come Friday I'll be sleeping in a new bed, and I may just stay in there all weekend!
