Hello! My name is Khara and my wonderful husband and I just transferred to Yorktown, VA. I am in the Coast Guard and he is a civilian trying out a new job in financial advising. I have extensively toured the battlefields (I jog around them on my lunch break) and was wondering what other adventures there might be in the area. Any ideas?

Re: New to Yorktown
Hi there! I grew up in Yorktown (I live in Richmond now) and my parents still live there, about 1/8 mile from Surrender Road actually. I loved it there and I really hope you like it.
There's not a whole whole lot going on IN Yorktown but I would definitely check out the Visitor's Center to learn all about the history and check out the Carrot Tree (http://www.carrottreekitchens.com/home) for lunch sometime. The boardwalk is fairly new and the Rivah Cafe is great and the Yorktown Pub is not to be missed. Also check out Pop's on 17. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but you will not be sorry you ate there.
Nearby:
Williamsburg: Williamsburrg Winery, Busch Gardens is open until the end of October, Merchants Square, Colonial Williamsburg is beautiful when they get all the holiday decorations up and Prime Outlets.
Jamestowne: the historic fort, replicas of Columbus's ships, history galore of course.
Of course you'll notice that most of your shopping is done in Newport News or Hampton. Norfolk really has the best mall in the area (MacArthur center) and the Virginia Beach Amphitheater has some pretty good concerts in the spring/summer/fall. Virginia Beach is only about 45-60 mins on 64.
I can't think of anything more right now, but if you're looking for something specific page me or PM me. I lived in Yorktown from 3rd grade to graduation and I visit there about 5-6 times a year. Both my parents and my H's mom live there, so we're in and out all the time.
Hey!
I live in Newport News, but everything BARINE listed is right! Also, I haven't don't any of this, but friends of mine go to Yorktown to do hauted house stuff. Yorktown Beach is also pretty nice too.
Just moved from Hampton
In addition to the battlefields, Jamestown is right there as is Colonial Williamsburg (love the wreaths that go up later this month). You also aren't far from Busch Gardens (look into CG discounts, if AD military get them maybe you get something too). If you cross the water there is also VA Beach about an hour down I64.
If you're interested in military history, I'd recommend swinging by Fort Monroe (in Hampton of I64 just before the HRBT). The Fort has about 400 yrs of history to it...and it has a moat. Ft Monroe has been slated for closure via BRAC, supposedly its closing next year.
ETA: Just read Waltz' post and totally agree with it. How could I forget the Outlets?!?! I've been to W'burg Winery and I'd recommend the Gabriel Archer Reserve if you like reds Also, Busch started doing something around Christmas last year...Christmas Town (or something like that).
