Hi! I am a novice gardener and an old neighbor of mine gave me a rose bush. I live in Minnesota and it's about to get cold! Plus, I have an HOA and don't really deal with my yard care or any upkeep. I am PRETTY sure they will let me plant this bush, but we have rocks around our home, not mulch. Is it bad to plant a rose bush in rock trim? Everything I am seeing in my online searches talks about planting it in mulch and I don't have that option. Or should I just buy a large pot and leave it in that? Finally, whether I plant it in ground or in a pot, with winter around the corner do I hold off on having it outside or how do I make sure it survives...
Thank you!!!
Re: I'm new--question about rose bushes
IMO you have one of 2 options:
1. Keep it in a container and get good instructions on how to take care of it as an indoor plant.
2. Plant it in the ground (it won't survive in a pot in a MN winter) and buy a small bag of mulch to spread around the plant.
If you go with option 2, I'd get some clear plastic to put over it for the winter so it has a chance to overwinter OK.
