Riverboat tours? Other fall fun for guests?

Has anyone done one of the riverboat type tours in the Twin Cities?  Either down the Mississippi or on Lake Minnetonka?  My mom and step-dad are visiting (from OR) in a few weeks, and I'm trying to come up with some fun, low-key activities for seeing the cities and enjoying the fall colors.

They like good food, wine, beer, outdoors activities... they're not really museum-types... When they've visited in the summer, I've taken them canoeing, but mid-October is a little cold for that...

Just trying to think of some new creative ideas...  I did a quick websearch, and most of the river boat tours sounds pretty expensive, so I'm wondering if they're worth it, or if they're lame?

If anyone has any experience (good or bad) with the riverboats, please share!  And... if you have any other suggestions for entertaining the 'rents while they're in town, feel free to share those as well :)

Thanks!

  • We've done the boats in Stillwater, and I've always enjoyed them.  We usually do the brunch cruise, which is around $18-20 a person for the boat ride and meal.  I think the fall colors would look great on the St. Croix around that time.

I really like going to Interstate Park and hiking at that time of year too.

Thanks!  I thought of that too--the St. Croix is so gorgeous this time of year.  But we just took my mom canoeing down the St. Croix and hiking at Interstate Park when she was visiting in August, so I was thinking of going somewhere different this time...

Stillwater area might be nice anyway though--maybe take them to the St. Croix vineyards and the apple orchards and then walk around town...  ?
