Stiff laundry

Hi all, I have a laundry-related question here:

We don't have a washing machine, and I wash a lot of my clothes by hand (the only exceptions are towels and bedsheets). Anyway, I'm sure this is a common issue, but when I hang my clothes on the line, they always end up stiff and just plain uncomfortable. Socks seem to be my biggest foe here. Sometimes I'll go outside as they dry and "crunch" the clothes with my hand, shake them about, but it doesn't help much.

I've heard of rinsing with vinegar to soften clothes, but it might be hard if I'm washing by hand..... I'm willing to give it a try, though! What do you all do to keep your line-dried clothes soft? TIA!!!

Re: Stiff laundry

  • I used to religiously line dry everything.  Then I had a 2nd kid, LOL.

Anyway, my experience was that no matter what if you hang dry your laundry it will be stiff, period.  Doesn't matter if you do 5 vinegar rinses or none.

The idea with the vinegar is it gets out residual soap, dirt, whatever, and the clothes will be less stiff if they are more clean.  But they will still be stiff.

We just got used to it.  Well, DH moaned and groaned but I told him to deal with it.  When I eventually go back to hanging to dry we will have to go through soft fluffy dryer withdrawal all over again.

  • Have you tried steam ironing everything? I used to crunch my items up as well, then steam iron. Even socks and undies. I hate crunch socks and undies.

It seemed to help soften the fibers.

  • Most, we have just gotten used to it. However, I've notice that since I have started using homemade laundry detergent, things are less stiff...

  • I tried the vinegar rinse once, and it didn't seem to make a difference to me. For the most part, I just don't line dry socks, undies and bras for this reason. But I have found that the longer I leave it on the line, the crunchier it is, so I check it frequently and take stuff down as soon as it is dry. Sorry, not much help!

You bring up a good point. Grandma always took it down when it was just damp and ironed it right away. I always thought it was because she had an old fashioned iron that didn't steam and the "just damp" made it press better. But her stuff was soft. Now I wonder if softness was the real reason. Hmmmmm.

My grandma would use an old ringer washer and line dry everything (no dryer), but her clothes and linens were soft too. I remember being sent out to take the clothes off the line when everything was still damp, but I was too busy playing to see what she did next... probably ironed them.

  • Gee I was afraid of that! (the whole "getting used to it" part LOL) Well, thanks all, for the help, advice, and stories (and by all means, keep 'em comin').

Looks like my iron is going to be my new best friend! And actually, I looked up the wringer washer, and it looks cool! Sure I could find one of those.....

We are moving within the next couple of weeks so my HOPE is that we find a place with at least a washing machine..... or room for one LOL. We currently live in a 550 sq. ft. cottage, so there's no room here! Packing up our stuff to move is exciting! Thanks again to all!
