Are you really interested in the ereader rundown? If so, I am happy to write it up for you and make a rec on which one would be best for you.

What kinds of books do you read? How much do you read? Do you use the library? If not, why not? Because it is inconvenient to go there or because you don't want to wait to get your book?

Re: Fenton

  • I don't think I need a 30 page white paper on ereaders, I was just wondering about the compatibility issues for long-term usage (like if you can get all formats on one type, but only Amazon on the kindle, that sort of thing), and which do or don't have web browsers (wireless only, I am not paying for 3G service, and those devices are cost prohibitive if I'm putting in a Christmas gift request).

what I read is kind of all over the place: fiction, political stuff, some business/marketing stuff...  I read maybe a book per month, but I'm thinking if I could get new stuff at the drop of a hat, I'd read more.  I do work in a library (not for the library, though), so about half the books I read are from the library.  But it's a small school, so they don't have everything I want.  For example, they have only the second book of the Hunger Games series.  WTF?  And newer books are hard to get ahold of.  The staff are the ones snagging them all up, so I probably only have to wait a few months, but it's still a minor annoyance.

I was actually thinking that the Kindle would be more of a thing I take on trips and use to buy the cheaper e-versions of things I'm only marginally interested in.  Like how I typically buy singles I want on itunes, but if I want the whole album, I'll buy the CD (then rip the songs off of it, but I like having the album if it's something I really want).

That's my only thing with the e-reader. I  pretty much use it for fluff and silly reading. Anything substantial that I really like, I want a hard copy of. I just like having the books on the shelf.

  • So here's the long and short of it then.

Popular fiction and non-fiction is almost always sold with DRM - digital rights management which means you can only read it on a certain type of device. Neither B&N or Amazon will sell books that work with any ereader other than the one they sell.

You will not be able to buy books for your Kindle from B&N or Borders. For popular fiction and non-fiction you will only be able to buy from Amazon. Classics and niche stuff you can probably buy from other websites and read on your Kindle. Kindle currently has the newest screen technology and Amazon has the widest selection of ebooks, not a ton more than B&N but more.

If you buy a Nook from B&N you can only buy the popular books from B&N. Classics and niche stuff you can buy from other websites just like the Kindle. The benefit to the Nook for you is that it will work with the St. Louis library's selection of ebooks. They have 1000+ ebooks. http://overdrive.slcl.org/23204A5E-40CF-4DF4-8195-A3A732CA0771/10/380/en/Default.htm you can search to see if they have the stuff you will like. I have a couple friends with Nooks and they get mixed feedback. In fact my best friend is returning hers after months of trying to get it fixed and fairly crappy customer service. And B&N is for sale so, there's that.

I don't think you would make a mistake with either, but it sounds like what you are going for is ease of use and intermittent use, so I would probably pick Kindle UNLESS when you look at your library's selection you think you'd use it.

  • Fent, the 3G Kindle is $189 and you don't pay for 3G coverage. It's included.

For web browsing, too?  I seriously don't think I'll be needing to download stuff while I'm out and about.

Plus, I feel like I'm pushing it giving my mom a $140 gift idea.  Close to $200 and I'd feel like an assh0le.

  • Mod, thanks for the library link.  I had no idea you could get library e-books, too!  I would read a lot more political stuff (books by right-wingers that I don't want to pay for, definitely) and probably eventually parenting stuff that I just want to skim that way.  Hmmm....

Yup, web browsing, too! I haven't turned my 3G on in months, actually.

  • you haven't turned it on in months....which means it's useless?

Is the web browser in color, or B&W like the reading display?

I haven't turned the 3G on because it sucks the battery. I have a shitton of books loaded on it as it is.

The browser is B&W and SUPER basic. But I've checked my gmail and the weather and stuff on there. I haven't used the web browser since I got my Droid, though.

  • If I scrap the Christmas request, I think maybe the best idea would be to get an Android tablet, then get the free Kindle app.  But buying it myself kind of defeats the purpose.  I just need to get rich already.

So one more question, can you read any old PDF on the Kindle?  I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but please confirm.

  • Yes, you can read PDFs but the delay in turning pages is obnoxious. It might be better in the brand new ones, I'm not sure.

  • I feel like the reason you get an ereader is because of the display -- it provides less strain on the eyes and you can still see everything in direct sunlight.  Plus, the eInk is just cool.

  • OK, so on the Kindle I can probably read library e-books in PDF format, but not EPUB format.  Confirm or deny.

ETA: Google is my friend.  Have any of you guys attempted to install Savory to convert EPUB files? http://blog.fsck.com/2009/04/savory.html

  • Dude, check your FB mail.

  • Savory does not remove DRM. All Overdrive library books including PDF have DRM and can not be read in their native format on the Kindle. Any text file without DRM can be made to work on the Kindle for free.

Email me or Bob if you have more questions.
