So H and I (and my 5 other friends) are road trippin it to SF in a couple weeks for the weekend. (Thurs-Mon)
I need your help. We're taking the scenic route & staying 1 night in Carmel and the rest in SF proper. (We're also running Nike Half that weekend!)
I need any and all recs of places to go/eat/see from here to SF and in SF proper.
Please?Pretty please? None of us have ever been and I'm trying to figure out some sort of itinerary.
The men in the group have asked that we stop and check out Alcatraz one day- so that's about all I have planned so far (and the race of course).
Help! Thanks in advance!
Re: I'm a SF virgin.
We did all the tourist stuff:
- ghirardelli square
- Alcatraz
- Fishermans wharf
We were ony there a couple of days for a wedding and thats all we could fit in. If you are driving I would try to fit in a trip to the Winchester house and or Hearst Castle.
9/19/12: Miscarriage at 12wks due to Triploidy, D&C 9/24/12 - I will forever miss you my little angel
Umm...get ready for way too much information!
On the way
Building on LauraPalmer's post:
Solvang: Tastes of the Valley is an excellent wine bar. Definitely hit up one of the bakeries for treats for the rest of the ride.
San Francisco:
- Get your tickets for Alcatraz in advance. I hear that the night tour is really awesome.
- Since you're a SF virgin, do all the touristy stuff: Start at Union Square to check out some of the "Hearts in SF" display, take the cable car down to Fisherman's Wharf, walk over to Pier 39. Have some clam chowder in a bread bowl from Boudin, see if the sea lions are still around off of Pier 39.
- Walk through Chinatown and North Beach (they are adjacent to each other). You can get great unexpected views of the Bay Bridge and Transamerica Pyramid in between some of the streets & alleys.
- Visit the crookedest street in the world (a segment of Lombard Street).
- Check out the Ferry Building Marketplace for foodie paradise.
- Check out SF Shopping Centre & the Westfield Shopping Center for shopping paradise. Both are across the street from the Powell St. cable car turnaround.
- For a taste of "old San Francisco" take the California St. cable car up to the Fairmont and/or Top of the Mark (great vews) for a cocktail in a swanky hotel. They are across the street from each other and across from Grace Cathedral. It's a hilly ride!
*sigh* I really wish my weekend weren't so jam-packed or I'd take you around!
Thank you thank you thank you!!!
I can't believe I forgot North Beach! Definitely worth a stop, there are a bunch of great Italian restaurants there.
Starlily you're making me want to take a trip to SF!
