XP: Subletting problem

We are in a sublet for the next 8 months (came here for a temporary job for DH).  We are out-of-state, so we didn't see the place, only saw pictures, and they were nice (and deceiving).  The place isn''t in great condition, but worse, they left ALLL of their crap here (they went on an extended overseas vacation).  They took most of their clothes, but left a few things in each closet.  In the family room ALLLL of the dressers/cabinets are filled.  The medicine cabinet was full of their stuff, same as the kitchen pantry.  She did say that we could eat anything they left, but I wasn't expecting open bags of potato chips, etc.  I'm not going to eat someone's leftovers that I've never even met.  Am I being unreasonable to think that they should have cleared out their cupboard?  There's nowhere to even put my kids' toys.  What would you think about this?

Re: XP: Subletting problem

  • I would have probably looked over the place upon arrival and wouldn't have taken it if things were unlivable.

First, I would probably try to contact them and tell them your issues.  Maybe you can move some of their things into storage (on their dime - tell them you will take it out of your rent so that you won't risk not getting reimbursed).

If this doesn't work and they refuse to make accomodations, I would probably start looking for a new place.  Did you sign a legally binding document with them?  I don't know how sublets work exactly, all of the people I know who have done them seem to have done very casual agreeements, so if its the same in your case, I wouldn't hesitate leaving if they don't make a little effort.

  • it's not unreasonable for you to want a clean place upon moving in.  that sounds gross, and i'd be super p*ssed if i were in your situation.  unfortunately, with sublets, that happens, though.  i hope that they are reasonable with you about adjusting the price or something.

  • Get some boxes and put any clothes & the medicine cabinet cabinet stuff in them.  Stick them in a closet or if the building has a storage room, there.

    Toss the food.

You're not wrong but it's pretty typical from sublets I have seen.
