Has anyone ever made homemade pumpkin pie? HH loves pumpkin pie and I would love to make him one homemade. Right now we have one Sara Lee made sitting in our freezer waiting to be baked. I'd really like to make one for Thanksgiving from scratch though. I found this recipe, and it looks promising. Does anyone have any tips for me?

Re: Pumpkin Pie
I have been told I make a killer pie crust. My secret: I use the pie crust recipe in the Betty Crocker cookbook. I have found that it takes a little more water than the recipe calls for but it is delicious and flaky! Once I made a pumpkin pie from scratch. I didn't like the texure as well as when I used canned pumpkin and steaming the pumpkin to remove the flesh was very messy.
Definitely go with the homemade pie crust. You can make what we call Pinwheels with the leftover dough. Take whatever you have left, roll it out kind of thin, spread butter liberally all over, sprinkle with plenty of cinnamon and sugar, then roll it up. Cut pieces about 1/2" thick and put them on a baking sheet and cook till golden brown. For real my family's favorite part of making pies.
I do also have a great pumpkin pie recipe if you're interested.
You've heard what I've done, not what I've been through.
If you were in my shoes, you'd fall the first step."
I always make my pie crusts - you just have to. They are sooo much better. I use half shortening and half butter. I also use a little bit extra water.
I've heard that canned pumpkin pie is way better than from scratch but i've never made either. I usually make pecan pie but this year for thanksgiving i'm going to make an apple maple cinnamon pie..should be yum!
I LOVE pecan pie.. my family requests them from me for holidays! Last time I threw in some chocolate chips - big hit! Good luck!
I make a Jack Daniel's Pecan pie. Just add the booze to the goo. Put chocolate chips in the bottom of the crust, fill the crust up with pecans and then pour the goo over. YUM. It's a favorite with my family.
I've never made a pumpkin pie completely from scratch but I'm thinking about trying it this year. I've always used canned pumpkin. We're more pumpkin cheesecake fans in this house!
And I always make my crust from scratch. It just tastes SO much better. I use three parts butter and one part shortening. And always chill it before working with it! If you have parchment or just plastic wrap, it helps to roll it out between it, that way you don't have to worry about sticking as much.
I'm very interested! Please share!
I make homemade pumpkin pie every year - use the canned pumpkin, though, and make life easier on yourself.
Libby's has a good recipe.
