October baseball dilemma

As you can probably tell from my sig, I am a Reds fan.  My dad has had season tickets for the Reds since well before I was born.  In 1990, when last the Reds went to the World Series, my dad took my brothers and my uncle to the games.  He told me at the time that I get first crack at his tickets the next time the Reds are in the playoffs--which I am holding him to.

Here is my dilemma:  I live in Switzerland.  I can swing one three or four day trip to Cincinnati, but I can't do more than that.  Should I book plane tickets corresponding with the first series of the playoffs--the only games I'm guaranteed they'll play--or do I wait, and risk not seeing playoff baseball in my hometown at all, for the possibility of seeing Games 1 and 2 of the World Series in my home town?

What would you do?  The first playoff games or gamble on them making it all of the way?

Re: October baseball dilemma

  • Wow that is a tough decision! If it were me, I would go to the first series of the playoffs, so I would be guaranteed to see them in the post season.

This!  I would go to the first series so you would not regret it if they don't make it to the next round.

  • Definitely go to the playoff game.

  • Playoffs.  Not even a question.  You can't guarantee a World Series - sure it would be nice, but no guarantee.
I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.
  • Definitely playoffs. Besides there is no way they are beating the ever so hot Phils for a spot in the series.

  • Hmmmm... this is really difficult

I, too, am a die hard Red fan and I plan on going to a few playoffs games (and hopefully World Series?!?)

the practical side of me says you should come in for the playoffs, but the more wild side of me says WORLD SERIES!!!

yeah yeah, we gotta get past Philly... but I look back to 1990 when the Reds had to face the Pirates and THEN the A's (who were heavily favored) in the World Series.  Anything is possible...

I don't know... the Reds have built and are continuing to build a very strong ball club, so there is a good chance there will be more October seasons to come for them over the next several years.

either way, Cincinnat is an exciting and energetic city to be in right now - I was down at the game last night and it was INCREDIBLE!!!

Good luck with your decision and Go REDS!!

  • I would probably risk it and wait for the world series, but I also do not really care that much about baseball. will you be really upset if you wait and they lose and you do not get to see them? if so, then you should probably go to the first series.

Honestly that was my first thought too, and I'm a Braves fan.

  • I wish I had your dilemma. I'm a Mets fan.

Seriously, I'd go to the playoff game. If they make the WS, you could always try to get back to Cincy and ask your dad for more tickets.

  • It's not that my Dad wouldn't give me a ticket for multiple games.  He would move heaven and earth to get to see me more often than he does.  I just can't get away from home for more than a few days right now, so two trips so close to one another isn't really an option.

  • So, what did you end up doing? I know I would have taken the tickets to the first round, because my team has a bad habit of losing in the first round.

I held off.  I didn't want to fly 18 hours round-trip to watch them lose a playoff series.  In my Cincinnati-raised mantra: there is always next year".  Although we might be going to NYC for a few days if the Yankees win the ALDS so that H can watch his hometown series--BIL has season tickets in the Bronx.
