Merin or other pet people

We have been having a lot of trouble with fleas this year. Even with Frontline Plus every 4 weeks Zoey has been super itchy and while I don't find flea eggs or anything on them, there is usually a live flea or 2 every time I brush her or give her a bath. I haven't been able to find any on Eldrick but his undercoat is a lot thicker than hers. My mom told me that the people at the pet store said the fleas in this area have become immune to the frontline and it's not working like it used to. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

We are going to be more diligent about keeping the yard sprayed but I know they can still pick them up when we take them other places.

Re: Merin or other pet people

  • I don't think I'll be much help, but we have only ever used the pill that they get once a month for heartworm.  I can't think of the name at the moment, but it does fleas too.

  • are you using the prescription frontline from the vets office or the over the counter stuff they sell at pet stores?
  • I buy it from 1800PetMeds or another online site that I can't think of the name of at the moment.

  • Interesting.  I have not heard about the resistance to Frontline, but I'd definitely consider switching it up to a different brand, and/or considering a natural alternative.

Also, if it's ongoing, it may be that they're never really dying and just keep reproducing.  I'd try getting a Capstar tablet from the vet to kill off any that may be there and then go with a new preventative.

  • You can either get Frontline Plus or you can get Frontline Top Spot, the Frontline is the prescription kind that is stronger, the Top spot is the OTC. You can get either one of those from an online site. The Frontline Plus is the better stuff, I know lots of people (well not lots, more like 3 or 4 people) who still get fleas using Top Spot, but I know no one who has had flea problems using the Plus version.
  • My mom just told me about it yesterday so I am going to keep a better eye on it for sure. I have been washing Zoey with Tea Tree shampoo because it helps with her itching, but I have heard that putting some of the oil on their collar can also help prevent fleas so next time I am out and about I think I am going to get a bottle of actual tea tree oil and put it on their collars. I will probably start using the tea tree shampoo on Eldrick, too.

I just went and looked and what we have is the Plus version.

  • Monty hasn't had a problem w/fleas thankfully, even after he visited ILs and their dog had fleas. DH is good about checking Monty for them, and we have Frontline as well. It's probably Plus since it's from the vet, don't have it in front of me.

I need to get more and was going to order online too. I haven't heard of any resistance to the meds in the area though. Maybe it's different in your area?

  • Oscar has had flea issues this year too even with Frontline every 4 weeks.  I gave him a Capstar tablet to kill them all two weeks ago and I haven't seen any since. Haven't heard that about the resistance, but my vet said it's been a bad year for them outdoors.
