Small/Weird Space Gardening

I want a garden next year so bad I can hardly stand it!  My mom always had a nice vegetable garden.  Not huge...but enough to make lots of lettuce, tomatoes, squash, etc.

 Here's our situation...

The way our house sits on the lot...we have very little space on either side of the house

The backyard has some great spaces but the sun comes up on the front side of the house, most sun reaching the backyard is between 7-10am on one side and 4-6pm on the other side.

Is it even possible to create a vegetable garden with that?

  • I would try something in containers around the front.

  • I am planning veggies for my front yard because no sun elsewhere. I will be doing a mixed ornamental and edible plantings so it doesn't scream veggie garden.

That's what I did.  I have a big yard but it's mostly wooded and the back is torn up right now.  I put a row of azaleas, then a 3x12 square foot garden.  The front row consists of marigolds and peppers to deter deer.

  • Also, make note of how the sun changes during the seasons. You may find that you not-so-great sun now is a lot better in spring/summer. Right now we get 1-2 hours of sun in the back, but during summer there's one area that gets great sun. Containers are great if you have changing light conditions over the months.
