Re: Do you own or rent?

  • We own...we bought our place together after 5 years of dating, and of course, got married 5 years after that...nobody can ever accuse us of rushing into anything!

  • We own, we bought our house in December so its coming up on a year!

On a side note...Isn't the board super slow today?? Where is everyone?

  • We rent a house my MIL's owns now. I would love to buy a different house but with DH still not working we can't afford it. DH is the only child so her properties (2 houses, 1 apt and a twin) will become ours when she isn't around (she's 77, almost 78 I think). I did recently have the idea we could just add on to the house we have to make it more suitable for us. But still not a possibility right now.

  • We'd love to own, but we are still in grad school and don't know where we'll actually settle down, but we can't wait to own!

  • We've owned for almost 3 months now. :)

  • I have lived in my house for about 5 years, but my parents bought it (nicer than what I could afford at the time, and they got the bigger tax break).  We bought it from them not too long after we got married, and just before my dad retired.
  • We rent and probably will for a long time. We can't afford to own with DH's student loans and car payment plus I might be getting a student loan for culinary school soon :)

  • We've owned for almost a year.  The end of October will be exactly a year.  :)  We bought because of the tax credit.  Sometimes I still wish we rented, however it's fun owning your own place and taking pride in your own place!  :)

  • Currently renting (well...from my parents), while we save to buy our own place. Someday....

  • We rent. We could never afford anything in our area in a nice neighborhood, which is why we are considering relocating if I get into grad school. But everything is still up in the air right now.

  • We currently rent and can't wait to get our own place.  A few weeks ago we found something in the newspaper about getting assistance with buying a house, so we may eventually look into that.  Hopefully I can get a job soon (and it pays well) so that we can be outta here next year.

  • Rent at the moment but looking into buying.  We'll either buy a home this fall, or rent for a  year and buy a home next fall!  I can't wait to own, but at the same time want to be absolutely certain that we are ok with living there for a LONG period of time.

  • I didn't respond to the poll since I'm a special snowflake.  I own a one bedroom condo that I bought over 6 years ago, well before I met DH.  When we decided to live together in June 2009, he was renting a big 2 bedroom apt. with a roommate, and my small condo was just not going to be enough space for both of us.  So, we very politely convinced his roommate to move out, I moved in and rented out my condo - the real estate market was at its worst point and I would have taken a hit selling it.

I'd like to sell my condo at some point in the next few years, but I have a great tenant and am about breaking even with what I collect in rent, so there's no rush. I mostly would like to sell it before we buy a house so that I can roll over the equity I have.

We do want to eventually buy a house outside our town (which is almost all condo buildings), but I would say we're at least a couple years away. There's just a lot up in the air right now, from TTCing, to his job situation being unsteady, to the possibility of me being moved to a different work site. Plus, we love where we are from a social perspective (most of our friends live within walking distance), love our apartment and almost everything about our town, but the schools are awful and it's not a great place to raise kids.  There's no point in buying where we are now if we're just going to have to move in a few years when our phantom future child is of school age. We just don't want to give up this great lifestyle we have in our great town until we have to!

  • I'm also a special snowflake...We are currently renting...but we are in the process of buying like we are under contract for our house (YAY)
  • We have been in our house one year in November. Sometimes that mortgage/HOA fees really start to piss me off, but our house is super fabulous and was such a great deal that I always remember it's worth it!

  • We moved into our house in November 2007, so it'll be 3 years that we've owned.  I LOVE it.  It's a lot of work but so worth it!

  • I owned my own home for 8 years and when DH & I married I moved into his (now our) home that he's owned for 2 years. I sold my house (and even made a profit) on September 2nd. The original contract was signed in July so it was only on the market for about 2 months! Yay! However, it took 2 more moths to close. Boo!
