Favorite Bakery?

I love baking and I want to intern at a bakery to learn more about not only baking and cake decorating, but also the business aspect of running a bakery.

I am new to Chicago though, so I don't know a lot of bakeries around here to approach about interning. What are your favorite bakeries to go to? I would love to intern at a bakery that does a lot of specialty cakes but I will try any type of bakery at this point!

 TIA!

Re: Favorite Bakery?

  • I have no idea if they do interning, but I love Domino's bakery on Harlem near North Ave.
  • Dinkels is the most popular bakery.  I am not sure how you would approach an internship.  My largest concern is your competition may be those in a baking program at a school.  You may want to look into taking a couple classes at a school in baking and business management.

  • my fav is "bake" but it is more local, homemade, down-to-earth type place, rather than an upscale, fancy bakery. i just wanted to wish you good luck. it would be fun to make cakes and pastries all day long!
  • I second Dinkel's. Dee-lish. You can search "bakeries" on a site like Yelp or Metromix for more ideas. No personal knowledge as to how to go about getting an internship, but why don't you sent cover letters/resumes to those that you are interested in.
  • There are quite a few bakeries, Dinkels being one I also recommend. For some others, you can check out this link to the Cupcake Crawl I hosted last year. Many of the bakeries we visited may be places you could check into...

  • Sweet Mandy B's at Webster & Racine is my favorite. They seem to have a lot of DePaul students working there so they may be open to an intership.

For classes, you can check out Kendall College on Halsted. They have a part-time Baking & Pastry certificate program.

  • I second Sweet Mandy B's!   I also love Sensational Bites at Southport and Grace.  And my brother bought a cake for a party a few years ago (he was visiting me, and bought a cake b/c it looked cool for my friends housewarming party) from Rahmig's House of Fine Chocolates on Broadway just south of Belmont.  My brother is a huge food snob- and he still talks about that cake 3 years later.
  • I third Sweet Mandy B's and Dinkels.
