Preface: Hopefully I won't offend anyone by saying this, but that giant pig outside the BOB for artprize is a monstrosity. So ugly. Which led me to ponder...

Re: Clicky poll for discussion
I feel like the second should be true, but at the same time, I've found that some things I think are HIDEOUS, other people love. The same is true for music. Much of what my husband creates sounds like a mess of noise to me, but for him it is art.
After working at a place that had a lot of art from world renowed artists, I'm convinced it is more about the story they can come up with the "explains" the pieces, what it means, and how they were inspired by it, rather than the piece of art. I'm actually half joking and half serious about this. Sometimes I can only laugh when I read artists statement about certain pieces of art, especially when it is something like a white canvas and one line of red paint and the artist has this amazing story behind it that has the "experts" ohhing and awwing over it.
Years ago, 20/20 news show did a segement where they invited profession art critics to an opening. It was basically splatter paint on paper. They all had great statements behind the piece and what it meant. All the critics were fawning over the pieces. Finally the reporter comes out and tells them they were down by 1st graders, not professional artists. It was hilarious seeing their faces and some of them backtrack.
I think it would be an interesting side conversation to discuss if art needs to be beautiful.
I love the pig. Elegant, he is not.
I clicked the 2nd choice, but I think it's more between the two. I think that art is totally subjective, but there are 'standards' by which it can be judged to make it "good art."
-Does it make the viewer stop and think?
-Does it leave a lasting impression?
-Does it stir an emotion in the viewer?
Have you ever read "My Name is Asher Lev" by Chaim Potok?

This is good. Whenever I fall in love with a piece of art it's because of the last two questions. And it is not just an emotion that is stirred, but a deep emotion- sometimes one that I can't even put to words. I think that's why it leaves such an impression- b/c it portrays an emotion I can't otherwise express.
Edit: spelling.

From what I remember...yes. It was one of the first books I had to read for World Lit in college, and I recall writing the prof a TYN for making us read it.
She and I are friends to this day.
