Thinking of visiting... ? about valley fever?
Hi! I had a question about valley fever and was wondering if anyone here could tell me about how it is in Arizona. DH and I were going to go to Tucson in a couple weeks, but we're having second thoughts because of valley fever. Under normal circumstances I wouldn't worry about it at all, but DH is on some medication for arthritis that suppresses his immune system.
DH's doctors said it's a risk but they think it's ok to go, but when he called the Arizona Department of Public Health they were much more serious about the risks.
We were just wondering what you know about valley fever, what your experiences are etc. TIA!
Re: Thinking of visiting... ? about valley fever?
I've only ever just heard of it mentioned, never known of anyone having it or catching it while visiting. Lived here my entire life. I think he'll be fine.
I just heard of it last baseball season when a player of the Dbacks had it. Not even sure how he got it. But I've lived here all my 25 years and never had it or known anyone personally to have it.

yeah, this. it's really not something i'd worry about or plan your vaca around. have a good time!
Never known anyone with it either...
When I first moved here it seemed like everyone would "warn" me about it, but I haven't heard of a single case in the 10 years I've been here.
You'll be fine!
Thanks for the replies! If it was just me I wouldn't think twice about it, but it can be really dangerous for people with suppressed immune systems. Apparently 100,000 people a year get it and usually it's no big deal, but if DH got it, unfortunately it would be a big deal. I really hope we'll still go on our trip as planned but we'll see.
It is here, the spores live in the dirt in certain areas and when the ground is disturbed and people inhale the spores that's when they'll develop valley fever. It really isn't something to warn to not visit a place. Like pp say, many many people live here without ever developing it or knowing anyone who has.
I'd say enjoy your vacation, but probably keep the hubby out of construction zones :-) Have fun planning your trip!
