garlic anyone?

I'd love to grow my own garlic. I read that you are supposed to plant them in the fall and let them grow over the winter. Anyone ever do this and do you have any suggestions?  I'm in MI, but not sure of the zone. TIA

Re: garlic anyone?

  • Yes, plant the cloves now & mulch them.  In the spring you'll get sprouting.  If you've planted hardneck garlic, you'll get a flower stalk (scape) that you'll want to cut off when it curls over once or twice.  You can use this like garlic...it's a bit milder but very good.

You pull them out in the summer-ish time when 75% of the stalk part is brown.  Then you hang them to dry for a few weeks to "cure"

  • I grow garlic and shallots. Both should be planted about now, depending on your zone. You'll mulch over teh winter and then see sprouts in the spring.

I've also done early spring plantings of garlic. They don't do as well, but I still get garlic bulbs.

  • I grew garlic last year... It was pretty fool proof
  • last october I just planted cloves from the supermarket. they came out very small, and then I read somewhere  your not supposed to use supermarket garlic. This year I ordered 3 varieties online. fyi- if you are looking to buy online most places are out of stock by now.
