Moving to Indiana :)

Hi Everybody!

My husband and I are moving in March and now is the peak of us deciding where! We are looking in Indiana and Ohio. He is from Ohio but went to college in Indiana. I can always tell he is leanin more towards Indiana. I was wondering if maybe y'all have some advice on the best places in the state as far as morals, values, and raising a good family. I will take any suggestions to heart so give me anything you know! Thanks a bunch guys.

Re: Moving to Indiana :)

  • What type of amenities are you looking for in your new town?  Is the a specific field you are wanting to work in?  I know around Indianapolis (north side or south side is what I am familiar with) you can have the good morals, values, and raising a family.  Are you wanting to be near entertainment, sports, etc?

  • Ahhhhh!! I'm in Indiana wishing to move to Florida! Want to trade? Lol! Anyway, The northern part of Indianapolis would be the best bet if you are looking for good pay. Noblesville, Carmel, Fishers ... places like these are community based while still being close enough to Indianapolis that you could work there with an easy commute. Towns like Anderson and Muncie are losing jobs, and fast. You could also try Ft. Wayne if you are looking further north. I would recommend north of Indianapolis, though, if it were me. Best of luck!! Big Smile
  • Do you have any requirements? Big city, small town, types of jobs available, anything? What type of work do you and/or YH do?

I grew up in a small town in southern IN that was very safe with good morals, though it was quite boring to me as a kid. After college, I moved to Indy for several years and loved it. If you're looking to be near Indy, I agree with the NE side being a great recommendation - Fishers, Noblesville and Carmel area all have good schools, nice communities, and still close to the amenities in the city.

Oh, and where did your H attend college?

  • Hi!

Let me first say, I was born and raised in Indiana, and have only lived elsewhere (wash dc) for six months. So I love Indiana! But I will try to give my honest input.

I have lived in Indy (5 years) and Fort Wayne for 2 years. Indy is bigger. It has professional sports teams, lots more shopping, restaurants, etc. It is a great city.

Now here is my pitch for Fort Wayne. It is smaller (Indy is around 1 million people, Fort wayne is around 200,000) but along with being smaller comes some good benefits. Fort Wayne has minor league baseball and hockey, both of which are wildly popular. It has a cute downtown, two malls (one indoor, one outdoor) some great restaurants and bars. The cost of living is less--I am not sure how much less, but noticible.  Both Indy and Fort Wayne are family friendly--in fact Ft. Wayne just won an award by parenting magazine! Being pretty blunt, Fort Wayne is a bit more politically conservative than Indy.

I know this is pretty general, and I would be happy to go into detail if you have questions. Also, I want to point out that these are not the only two cities/areas worth considering, it is just what I have experience with!

    Good luck with your search!!

  • Indianapolis nester here. We moved back to Indiana in June and settled in Indianapolis. If he went to IU-Bloomington, it is just a hour drive and a great small town to visit (I'm a B-town townie). Also Ohio is just a couple of hours east from here as well, not sure where your husband is from but the Indy area or some of the surrounding small towns is a good choice for having your own lives but being a short drive away from family.
  • I live in Southport area about 10 miles from downton indianapolis.  I love it here people are really nice you are close to everything .  The only downside is traffic can be heavy in certain areas. I hear that the school are really good here ( I dont have children). It is a safe clean area with a good mixture of people. I have moved here from NE Ohio and it is a world of difference, choose Indiana.
  • I've lived in both northern Indiana and southern Indiana.  I grew up in a small town about 20 miles outside Lafayette and I loved it.  I've always loved the small town atmosphere, however convenience is an issue, we were basicall at least 20 miles for anywhere. Now I live in southern Indiana down in Jackson County and I will say as much as I loved my hometown I love living down here more.  People down here are so much more friendly and life is slower down here.  My dad was visiting a couple weeks ago and even made mention that people where so friendly here. If you're looking for fast pace then Indy maybe more your style but for us, its nice to really never know a stranger so to speak.

  • I grew up in Fishers and just moved right next door to Noblesville.  Both are GREAT! They are really nice areas and have a variety of houses/apts in every budget.  Schools are great as well.  I grew up sheltered in a good way by living here.  I did not have to deal with crime and violence everyday. I suggest moving here, Our neighborhood is amazing too if you want more specific location. Let me know if there is anything else.

  • I love love love Indianapolis - went to Ohio State and found Columbus, OH to not have anywhere near the same allure for me.  I grew up and am now raising my own daughter in a small town close to Bloomington (home of IU) where I'm soon to start graduate school.  I love that we are close enough to Indy to make it there in an hour or so but far enough away that things are pretty peaceful here.  I decided a while ago that I could and would make the commute up to the city if an amazing job ever opened there, but that I preferred to live somewhere where I can get away from traffic and other people. Bloomington is a great college town with plenty to keep me busy, in the mean time. ;)
