sippy cups

Which ones are the best?  I remember reading onces that sippy cups are not good because of tooth decay....is there some type of cup that has a straw that is better?

Re: sippy cups

  • I haven't heard the tooth decay thing.

DD uses Sipsters at first, then the straw ones by Playtex.?

  • Tooth decay happens when you give them a sippy at night and then do not brush their teeth afterwards, or they are sipping on the cup throughout the night ( while sleeping).  Brianna uses the Nuby sippy cups.. and she also uses straw cups.  She will only drink milk out of a cup w/ straw not a sippy cup!  = )
  • sippy cup decay happens for the same reasons baby bottle decay happens - kids carrying around the cup and taking a sip here and there throughout the whole day, kids falling asleep at night with the cup after teeth brushing, etc.  it's the same cause - prolonged and frequent exposure to the decaying sugars in milk or juices (or - gasp! - other sugary drinks like soda.  i know you wouldn't dare!  haha!).

as far as which cup brand is the best, that's entirely up to trial and error with you and K.  the most important aspect of introducing the sippy is to start early and to not give up if she rejects it the first 5, 10 or 20 times.  something else to keep in mind:  kids are perfectly able to drink from a regular cup at this age too.  not many people do it and it's quite messy at first, but you do have that option as well if you want to try it. (and good luck if you do!  that's very brave!)

the most important thing to keep in mind is no matter which brand you use or how she drinks it (straw cup, lidless cup, hard plastic top, soft rubbery top, etc), she should start taking her non-formula liquids from something other than a bottle from 6 months on out.  it will not only help her to break any exclusive attachment she has to her bottle (and therefore make it SO much easier on both of you when you ask her to switch solely to a cup on her birthday) but it will also help her develop a new set of feeding skills that are vital to encourage at this developmental stage.

good luck shannon!  she's getting so big!!

  • For a first sippy cup, I like the Nuby Soft Spouts.

After that, we moved to take-n-toss sippy cups.  They even make those with detachable handles so they are nice.
