Long "Glee" Rant....

My disclaimer is that I've never seen this show... but... it's really right up my "alley" in theory.  I love musicals and I was even in them as a kid.  Community theater, high school drama club, all that nerdy stuff.  A year or so ago, DH even said something like, "I'm stunned that you don't watch that show, you would love that crap."

So I heard that Britney Spears and John Stamos were on the same episode so I thought if I'm going to like it, it's going to be this episode!  So I'm watching it online right now and I can't believe how weird it is!

Let me know if I got this plot right... A glee club is at "practice" begging their instructor to do a Britney theme at some assembly.  He insists they won't, but of course later folds, under the condition that he gets to be in the show with the kids.  Weird.  Then for some reason a dentist (Stamos) came to their high school to teach them about brushing their teeth (which I'm pretty sure does not fall under jurisdiction of high school instruction).  Some of them went to his office for some dental work.  While they were "under," they all had similar Britney Spears fantasies where they were in her videos playing the part of Britney.  So they do the assembly but a weird PE teacher is really bothered by it for some reason so she pulls the fire alarm to end it.  Then they end the show with a non-Britney song.  Um... what?!

There were so many other things that bothered me, I hope I get them all. The "regular" Britney doesn't seem to have a soul.  She never smiles and she speaks in such a monotone voice!  The glee club "practices" but they never actually practice singing.  The cheerleaders wear their cheerleading uniform every day as if it's normal clothes.  The glee club instructor somehow makes enough money for a sports car.  The obviously gay glee club member (I don't know if his character is "out" or not) is way too gay.  I really think that if I were gay, I would be offended by a character like that.  Some random boy was so excited about these fantasies, he was "caught" thinking about them, somewhere in the school and he was naked?!  How is that appropriate? A boy in a wheelchair is on a football teem despite the wheelchair.  No offense to the handicapped, but I think the ability to walk is a really important part of being on a football team. A girl "tests" her boyfriend's love by telling the head cheerleader to hit on him?!  Don't teach girls that!   And, most of all, Britney didn't dance or sing at all!

Am I nuts?  Or heartless?  Or just too rational?  Does anyone else think this show is insane?  Or, did I just catch a bad one?

Re: Long "Glee" Rant....

  • I did not get into Glee until this summer and I have to say I DID NOT LIKE the Britney episode at all.  I would recommend to go back and watch last season as so far it has been better than this one in my opinion.

  • Glee is not meant to be realistic.  They play off of stereotypes in over-the-top ways.  The storylines are meant to be a little absurd.  It's a dark comedy, and it's what DH and I like about the show.

Last season it seemed to be more about building characters and storylines.  Neither DH and I are impressed with this season.  It's way too campy, and it throws in songs to drive the plot instead of the plot driving the song choices.

I would suggest, if you want to give Glee a fair chance,  go watch the first two or three episodes from Season 1.  I'm not sure if I watched the last episode as my first episode that I would have liked it either.

  • I agree with the others that the Brittany episode wasn't the greatest. It is a little hokey, but the singing is spectacular! Give it a few more weeks is possible.
  • I follow it for the songs...the story line is secondary!
My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!
