kindle

i really want a kindle. B said he'd get me one for christmas but i'm wondering if they're worth it? I haven't done a lot of researching on them. i don't know how much the downloads usually cost... or what all they do. i love to read and i thought it'd be easier than taking a book everywhere

Re: kindle

  • I love my Kindle. The eBooks are usually quite a bit less than the physical copies. If you read a lot of books and want to be able to take all your reading with you everywhere then I certainly feel it's worth it.
  • I too have contemplated getting one.

What happens if you take it on the beach and get sand in it or get it wet?

How or can you even share books? My mom,my Aunt and I all read the same books and pass them back and forth so would they also need to have Kindles?

If the answers to above are no then it seems like a complete waste for me personally. With a good ol' fashioned paper back I can take it on the beach, get sand in it get it wet and I can share them with my family. So I'm trying to find out if a Kindle would be the right choice for me.

  • I'm under the impression that most books are $10.  This makes it totally out of the question for me.  I rarely purchase a book unless I have to.  I read so quickly that the library and used book sales are my go-to ways of acquiring a book.

  • Love the Kindle - totally worth it!  If you have someone you trust, you can link up to their Amazon account and "share" books with them, if you're by the water (beach, pool), just put it in a ziplock bag.  All in all, I have MANY books on the kindle waiting for me to read, mostly b/c I share with my MIL - and you can read in bright sunlight, not like a laptop.  Although if you have a smartphone or iphone etc, you can download the kindle app and that's just as good, as long as you don't mind the small screen.

Wait, you mean the kindle book is $10 or a paper back is $10. If it's the kindle then that is insane. I pick up my paper backs for $8-$9 at the grocery store or target. At least they can get wet and will dry. Oh well, looks like the good old fashioned way is still my best bet.

Like any electronic technology, sand and water will most definitely ruin it.

However... if you get the Barns & Noble "nook" eReader it's not only a touch screen but you CAN share books from nook to nook. Also with the nook you can electronically check out books through your local library.

Kindle also has BUNCHES of free download books. Most of them are classics but they often do specials on other releases. Most books I buy on my kindle are $0 - $8. I don't really feel like spending more than that even if it was a regular book so seems fair to me. I also NEVER buy hard backs.

It really just depends on your personal preference. I love min but I also read 3 books at a time and live in NYC so it's much easier for me. Oh, and I can get the newspaper on it. :)

  • I have a Nook and I love it!  The battery lasts forever, it's very easy to read in sunlight, and it's a lot easier than carrying around a bunch of books.  If you really like to read, I would totally recommend it!!
  • Most libraries have e-reader systems set up to check out books.  The ones I know of only share the Sony eReader format, but there are programs around to convert to Kindle format.

As other said, if you have someone you trust that also has a Kindle you can share books.  I believe that each book you get from the Amazon store is authorized for up to 5 separate Kindles (sort of like songs in iTunes), but it might only be 3.

Take a browse around the Amazon Kindle store and get a feel for yourself what the prices are like.

The books that I've purchased have all been around the price of a paperback, and when you're buying a new book that's only available in hardcover, I'd say that's a pretty good deal.

  • I have a nook and I love it. I check out books from the library on it, and I like that I can share books with other nook owners.

You can ready any PDF on it, so I've downloaded some work materials on it, too. I love that I don't have to carry around a bunch of books. I also like that I can read embarrassing things like Twilight and no one knows. Embarrassed
