Can you help a visitor to Chicago?
I will be coming to Chicago in November on the Amtrak. I will have about a 5 hour layover, and will need to do something to occupy my time.
I'm thinking about heading to the Shedd Aquarium, but I'm not sure how far away from the train station it is. I'd like to do something fun without spending a ton of money. Grabbing something to eat is on the agenda, but again, without spending a lot of money. I'd like to stick as close to the station as possible.
TIA!

Re: Can you help a visitor to Chicago?
You won't be that far from the Shedd (maybe 2-3 miles) but I'd take a cab to & from. I'd say you only have about 3 hours of free time since traffic can be bad, you want to allow time to get to & from. You could also go to the top of Sears (Wilis) Tower. I think it's $15. That's on Wacker & Adams
I work a few blocks from Union Station. A lot of restaurants in this area are pricey, catering to the business crowd. Blackies (burgers) is right outside of Union on Monroe & Canal. I also like Bacino (Italian) on Clinton & Monroe. Thai Urban Grill is good, on the corner of Madison & Canal inside the Citi building.
Shedd isn't too bad to get to. Of course like anything in Chicago, it's all dependent on traffic. If you're looking to save some money, check out a trip planner like this: http://www.google.com/intl/en/landing/transit/#mdy and it'll tell you how to get there using public transportation, which is easy to use downtown.
You could walk to State Street too, where there's lots of shopping. Like pp said, the Sears Tower is across the street from Union Station, so you could go over there. You can go to check out Millennium Park, the Art Institute, or the Field Museum also, they are about the same distance as Shedd is.
