Any good books?

I'm almost done reading the Sookie Stackhouse series and I'm looking for a new book reed, preferably non-vampire. Read any good ones recently?

Re: Any good books?

  • I wish I could help.  I mainly read children's/adolescent books.  I teach several courses on adolescent literature and try to keep up.  I long for the day when I can read a "big girl" book.  If you want any adolescent recommendations, let me know!
    my read shelf:
Robin's book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I read it almost a year ago, but I always come back to it.  The Help by Kathryn Stockett.  It's great fiction reading.

I'm currently reading Letters to Jackie.

  • A Pirate Looks at Fifty by Jimmy Buffet.
  • I love the Shopaholic series, as well as all the other books by Sophie Kinsela - excellent 'chick lit' for a light-hearted read that will make you smile and laugh out loud!

I read Good In Bed and am reading Certain Girls by Jennifer Weiner too. Not bad reads.

And I just bought Women, Food and God last week but haven't cracked it yet...has anyone else read it?

  • I'm such a book worm! Lately, I have been into Sarah Dessen..she is a very easy read type author. Also, I've heard great things about Eat, Pray, Love and also The Help.

  • Thanks my ladies.

I read Good in Bed a long time ago and liked it maybe I should pick up another one by that author.

Someone recommended Water for Elephants, anyone heard of it? Apparently they are making it into a movie. Might check it out.

Totally random - Kym I'm stalking your blog I felt like I needed to tell you. lol

  • Oooh, I'm just finishing up the Sookie Stackhouse series, too!  Such a guilty pleasure of mine.  I usually read YA books because I teach 6-8th grade reading, but here is a YA book series that is AWESOME: The Hunger Games trilogy.  They are SO good!  Even if you're not a YA reader, these books will keep you hooked.
  • Totally Ditto Water for Elephants. The same author just came out with Ape House, and I just read it. Both are amazing... will keep you turning pages till late night hours!
  • I am a fan of the Dragon Tatoo series...I loved them all.  They are disturbing at times, but very "go-women" :-)

I also suggest going to the Nestie Book Club boards, they are very well-read and have great ideas usually!

I love both those series. I didn't like how Mockingjay ended though.

I read mostly sci-fi & fantasy (IE, vampires, werewolves, ghosts witches and the like) so if you need any suggestions in that category I have lots, but looks like you wanna stay away from that kinda thing by asking for non-vampire suggestions.

  • I thought The Help was decent.

I thought Water for Elephants was kind of stupid. I wanted to like it, but there were holes in the story, and I didn't feel like it had legs. Like, he's in love with this woman, but the book never really tells you WHY he's in love with her, except that she happens to like animals. I think that's kind of stupid, when half of the book is based upon his infatuation with her.

I'm almost done reading Zeitoun, which I've really enjoyed.

  • Oh, and the Dragon Tattoo series was ok too. I thought the writing wasn't the best (probably because it's been translated from Swedish), but they do have a tendency to suck you in. I'd give the first two books 3.5 out of 5 stars, and the last one would get 4/5 stars.
  • Oh, also ANYTHING by David Sedaris.  He writes humorous essays, and is absolutely hysterical!  He is probably my favorite non-YA author out there.  I highly recommend anything by him, especially if you're into somewhat dark humor.  I own all of his books, and he's the kind of author that I want to spend a day chatting with in a coffee shop because all of his stories are just so outrageous.  Also, Chelsea Handler's books are amazing!
