What are you giving out?
Locals, have you seen what PCC is selling for handouts this year?
Re: Halloween handouts?
That's what is likely happening this year. Its a waste of money - money that I don't have to waste! - to give them something they don't want (ie fair trade chocoloates, Annie's bunnies). They don't need more candy anyway. I am such a scrooge!! I think they are cute, and I like seeing the kids and my (male) dogs love it but... I really don't want to hand out anything.
The problem is my neighborhood has a TON of kids and I will probably be at the same party as them!
Could you do apples? I too am trying to think a little outside the box this year. My neighbor the pediatric dentist always gives out toothbrushes, my 93 year old neighbor gives out pretzels, so that's out too. I'll have to find out what the other neighbor is giving--we may end up being the "healthy" block.
Just out of curiosity, what is PCC (Is that your co-op?) suggesting?
I think we're at a party all night so no candy this year. But I'm horrible- I get the full boxes of Nerds. I LOVE those things!!!
If giving out jams would be acceptable I'd probably do that. My kitchen is overflowing with jams!
Apples? Yes, the kids will love that, and at $3/lb... ???
lol!!
Yes, PCC is a co-op here (multiple locations). I haven't been in since they've had Halloween stuff, so I don't know. I was hoping someone else could let me know!
We will be out trick or treating with the kids (and them coming home with a bag full of candy that I'll cringe at). But I'll have a bag of Yummy Earth organic lollipops on hand in case we're home early enough for trick or treaters. My kids love them. It's a nice little treat once in a while or when I really need them to do something. I'm not above bribing my children once in a while.
A couple of years ago, we got mini-Play Doh's at Costco... we have so few trick or treaters that we still have some left!
They're like this:
Not super green, but I know kids, and I know that the containers simply don't get thrown away... they'll use the play-doh, and when that's done, they'll keep the little containers to play with.
I am the 99%.
US TOO!
Actually last year we went out to dinner with ILs.

I like the tattoo and sticker idea.
I handed out juice boxes (and water in small plastic bottles
) the few years that I did it. We didn't get a ton of kids so it was relatively affordable to get the healthy-ish juice boxes at the co-op. Most of them drank it on the spot so we could recycle. That made me feel a little less guilty about the plastic water bottles.
Our new neighbors have a huge haunted maze in their yard so I help with that instead of hand out candy.
Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
We don't really get trick-or-treaters because we don't have sidewalks! Before we lived here, we lived in an apartment building that didn't have any kids living there. Sad, I know, I'm deprived, but I bet my dog would hate it anyway!
This year, Halloween happens to fall on moving day for us, so chalk up another vote for "Halloween Scrooges." Bah!
P.S. Yes, apples are much too expensive (and actually, many parents discard them because of horror stories of pins in them, etc.).... we just spent $12 on 1/2 a peck of honey crisp! Mmmmm, honey crisp apples :-)
I turn the light out, I used to buy stuff, and I'd only get trick or treaters from the three houses in my hood that have kids. Most of them go to church parties anyways.
Last year I told the parents a few days before that I'd like to come over at 6pm and see the kids in their costumes.
I made bags with cookies and an apple for each kid. Since I brought them over, and the parents knew me - I assume they'll think it's 'safe' and let the kids have them.
this iswhat we do!
we also hand out water bottles. kids and parents need em!!!!
I'm just another Halloween Scrooge.
The first year in our house, I was so excited for Trick-Or-Treaters after years of locked-in apartment dwelling. I waited, and waited. Shortly before the time was up, some high school aged kids were walking past, and I ran out to them and pleaded, "Oh, please stop, no one has come all night. Have some candy!" The next day, I found the packets littering the lawn. Needless to say, that was it for handouts.
We live WAY out in the boonies and a ways off the road, no trickortreaters for us...
When I have kids I'll be out with them anyway.
LOL!! That is a new one. "Ohhhh aren't you guys CUTE! Would you like an organic sharp cheddar? How about some fresh goat cheese?"
Maybe turn the lights out this year...
What about fruit leathers?
Personally, we'll be out mugging the neighborhood. Our church dresses up and teams go door to door handing out mugs (that have the church logo) stuffed with cocoa packets and other goodies. It's like reverse TOTing. Ring the doorbell, hand over the mug, say "you've been mugged by ABC church!" and run off. People get a kick out of it.
That's an awesome idea!
I had a wedding on Saturday & they had a candy bar for the guests. At the end of the night, the bride told me to do whatever I wanted with the candy. So, I brought the leftover candy home that had wrappers on it and there should be plenty. Otherwise, we'd be turning off the light...
