Poll: How much do you spend on gifts?

Re: Poll: How much do you spend on gifts?

  • It really depends.  Last year DH turned 30, so I spent about $150.  This year, I honestly can't remember what I got him!  We usually don't spend much on each other, and we discuss it in advance.  I will tell him, I just want a card this year, or I just want a nice dinner.  For Christmas, we didn't buy each other gifts but went on a weekend snowboarding trip in January instead.

  • We have a spending limit of $50.  But generally we go over a little.  I try to keep it below $75.

  • It is strictly correlated with how much they spent on gifts for me. Here, let me bring up my spreadsheet...

  • For the gift we will typically spend only $50-100, but then we always go out for a nice meal too and that will usually run another $80-120.

On "special/big" birthdays we might spend a lot more. I think DH spent around $500-700 total for my 30th including limo, dinner, gift, entertainment etc.

DH wants a huge party when he turns 30 next year so I can see it will be around $500 for that birthday.

  • Because we're both finishing school this year we've gone pretty cheap on birthday/anniversary gifts. However, last year for a wedding gift we both spent about $200 on each other since it was a very special occasion. I'm sure once we have a steady income it will go up to $50 or so depending on the significance of the occasion.

  • FI goes all out for gifts for me.  He gave me all new appliances for my kitchen, new car, diamond earrings, etc.  I usually spend around $200.

This past year, he forgot.  He was away and just ran out of time.  I forgot my birthday was coming too.  It was a crazy time.  I bought my own gift:  reasonable $75 massage.

We had a very big party for him this year...  about $3000.

  • It depends for us, usually around 150. I think it depends on what I want to get for him.  We just paid for a pretty good size wedding so these holidays comin up is gonna be a little leaner for us.
  • Truthfully a little offended by your "comments" on the poll. Over $100 (only the best). Really?

I generally spend over $100 on his bday present, but not because it's "only the best" - but because I generally do something that is meaningful and he will remember. This year, I put together a brunch with his friends and family and then had a chef's table dinner at one of his favorite restaurants - total cost around $600 but the memories will last a lifetime.

Spending is irrelevant. It's the experience and the thoughts that count no matter the amount spent.

  • Usually we spend about $200 on each other but this year we both bought new cars so we decided on no gifts.
