My orchid died

I've had an orchid for about 3 weeks now.  I could tell it was stressed because the petals were starting to fall off.  I only watered it once a week as the directions said and made sure it was able to drain.  The roots looked good and didn't look like it needed to be repotted.  Now it is a stalk with no petals at all.

What do I do now?

Re: My orchid died

  • I'm confussed.  The flowers are supose to die.  Are the leaves still green?  If you have it in the right light, then it will eventually put on new buds and bloom.  The best I have every seen is once every 4 to 6 weeks a new branch with blooms will grow.

  • I agree, I think the bud is going to eventually die no matter what.  Keep the leaves looking healthy and you'll be fine.

  • i was told when the flower falls off, trim the stalk all the way down

  • The flowers will fall off, and I was told to trim it an inch above the lowest bloom on the stalk when the flowers fell off.  This year I had an orchid that I thought died.  The flowers and leaves fell off, the stalk turned brown, but I stayed hopeful and kept watering it, and I've seen some new growth on it recently. Just keep trying.
  • The flowers WILL fall off so don't worry about that. As long as the leaves are green you should be fine. New branches will bloom. If you notice that the branches seem "dead" then trim the stem up to 5 joints or if not 5 then 3 from the base. If the whole stem turns brown and dies is when you trim the stem all the way down. The blooms I believe last 6-12 weeks.
