Hidden gems

What are some hidden gems around the Valley that only people who have lived here for years would know about?

Nia got me thinking since she posted about the Farm.

Fill me in girls. I want to do some fun things this "winter" that are outside or relatively inexpensive with DH!

EV farmers markets, pumpkin patches, great family restaurants, etc. Anything....and GO!

  • My FAVORITE thing to do during the holidays in Phoenix is Luminaria at the Desert Botanical Garden!  They have all the paths lined with luminaria bags, musical groups spread throughout the garden, food, hot cider, bars (for those non-pregnant ladies).  It runs from right after Thanksgiving to right before Christmas!  You should go to that FOR SURE!

  • I cant wait to do the Luminaria's at the Desert Botanical Garden. Never been but heard such great things about it.

Schnepf Farms is a cool pumpkin place. I might be taking my nephew this year.

The year before last we went to the Hale Theater in Gilbert and saw "A Christmas Carol" it was a great show. You are like right in the middle of it, which makes its awesome.

I think that is all I cant think of right now.

  • I used to work at the DBG (way back in the day) and we had to light those luminarias by hand, all 6,000 of them!  So I have a totally different appreciation for the event, but it is amazing none the less!  Just be sure when you go to take a second and marvel at the fact that people had to bend over at each bag to light it, bend over at the end of the night to snuff it out and then do it again the next day, and the next day and the next day for almost a month!

  • LOVE the Farm.  If you make it out here, definitely check out The Fruit Barn. It's on Baseline between 24th and 32nd St.  It's a cute little store with locally made breads and fresh fruits/veggies. Oh and they have really good honey, if you like honey.

For a romantic dinner, try Quiessance at the Farm. It's in the very back and super cute! It's a bit pricey, but Matt and I go there every now and then b/c the food and the atmosphere is awesome!

  • i love the christmas show and i mean SHOW at phx fist assembly here is a video about it. its free i think or very cheap...

the nest haunted house at rawhide. it was voted number one.

the christmas lights at community church of joy. it think its like $10-15 and all goes to charity. i found this link about it.

parade of lights in downtown chandler before that go to the tree lighting at tumbleweed.

if you are planning any trips up to flag i would grab a quick bite at macy's link here. AWESOME CAFE!

nobuo is a great asain teahouse its in downtown phx.

this local bakery has the best maracoons and croissants ever.

you can also visit downtown glendale for the 'glendale glitters' (christmas lights, carriage rides, etc.) and check out all the local shops.

if you havent been up to south moutain i would drive there and stop here on the way to get the best mexican type snowcone ever. they were voted best of phoenix too. (be aware that you are in south phx tho and the snowcone place is like an old historic house. there will be a line but it is worth the wait i promise)

  • Corn field mazes!!  One of my favorite things to do in the fall!

In December, I love Glendale Glitters.

  • And I don't know where you live, but my favorite breakfast place is The Place in northwest Phoenix (51st Ave & Bell).  Mom & Pop type restaurant (first opened in Flaggstaff - and pretty famous up there).  It's small and has kind of a diner feel to it.  The food is amazing!  I'm actually craving it, and since we are going to be up in Phoenix this weekend, I'm insisting on it for breakfast on Sunday before we head home.  lol
  • Also, doesn't the Phoenix Zoo do Zoo Lights around Christmas time?

And yeah, Zoo Lights are coming out soon. But I think they do have Boo at the Zoo too.

Yep!!  It's on the southeast corner of 51st Ave. & Bell (which is my old neighborhood - I could have walked to it from the house I grew up in).  There is a Walgreens in the plaza, and I think (?) Chili Bombers (used to be Swenson's and then it was Majerle's, and now I think it's still Chili Bombers).  It's in the back, near what used to be a movie theater (a long time ago), and then I think it was a furniture store.  Now, I don't know if anything is in there.  But yep!  It's there!  And every bit as good as the ones in Flaggstaff!  =)
