What are your thoughts?

http://www.myfoxboston.com/dpp/news/local/school-withdraws-from-game-cites-health-concerns-20101005   I don't agree with the decision but I'm wondering if I might be in the minority on this one.

Re: What are your thoughts?

  • I think that's dumb.  Our district's HS played their first game against a GIANT team from the neighboring county.  I know I commented on the opposing team's size at least once every 10-15 minutes because it was so noticeable.  Of course, it doesn't take much to be bigger than a bunch of skinny, corn-fed, farm boys.  But I didn't feel like our team was in any danger whatsoever.  They took their whooping and moved on (to lose many more games this season).

You can't control that the other team does a good job at recruiting the big boys, or the fast boys, or the hard hitting boys, or whatever.  You can only control your school and teach them how to take the hits properly, and use thier small size to an advantage, which can be done.

I will say, though, that if this is an issue every year for several years where this team runs over EVERY school in the league/district, that might be more of an issue to me.  But the way to resolve that is to look into redoing the classification so that they play against other big/good teams and it's all more evenly matched.  I'm not sure how easy that would with schools, though.

  • My question is if they chose to play them.  If they are not in the district, then typically someone picks other teams to play.  FWIW, DH is a high school teacher and his "farm boy team" beat the "city big boys,"  so anything is possible.  The opposing team was HUGE!!!

  • I'm wondering if the school was getting pressure from concerned parents?  I think they could have played the game (and likely lost). But I'm not sure forfeiting (and making such a public show about it) was necessary.

When our HS first opened a few years ago, the school only had Freshman and Sophomores in the school (the upper classmen were finishing their HS program at the previous school) and the football team had a terrible year (I think they won one game). Why? Because the team only had 9th & 10th graders on it playing against schools with 11th & 12th grade starters that were considerably bigger than them.  Players did not get hurt anymore than they do now (at full strength).

I do think those early players learned to play on against adversity - in their second year at "full strength" the team is undefeated.
