Recommend your real estate agent

FI and I are beginning to look at buying a house in the next few months.  We have already gotten all of the mortgage pre-approvals taken care of, but we don't have a real estate agent to start looking at homes with.  We had one in the past (we started looking a while back and decided against it at that time), but we didn't love her.

I'm looking for someone who will be proactive in a home search and bring some options to us, along with showing us properties that we find.  With our last REA we felt like we were doing all the work by scouring the MLS and telling her what we wanted to see.  Plus she wasn't very accessible during the times that worked for us.

Do any of you have a recommendation based on a rave review of your own?  Thanks!

Re: Recommend your real estate agent

  • What area/ city are you looking in? It seems best to have an agent who knows your area well.

    Good point!

We are most likely looking at certain specific areas of St. Paul and the St. Paul-ish suburbs (Eagan, Inver Grove, Cottage Grove, Oakdale, etc).

  • I am a RE agent and more specifically a Buyer Specialist...so I don't really work with sellers I just specialize in the unique needs of buyers and enjoy that.  I am very familiar with all the areas you're looking in as I grew up in St. Paul and the surrounding areas.  PM me if you would like to chat further.

This is always something good to look for as it really doesn't take much from my end to be sending you emails with some new and active properties that fit your description.  And if you email me some properties you're interested in I'd get the fact sheets emailed to you right away so you can see.  If an agent that is working with buyers isn't doing this then I have to wonder how their other business is going.

  • We worked with Gary Cooper of CU Realty. He also sold my FILs old home and helped him find his new home.
He was always updating us with new listings that fit what we were looking for - more than once a day at times. He also brought us to listings that we found. Sometimes right out he would tell us we werent going to like it - and we never did but he never didnt bring us to a house to see - which was nice.
he also really fought for us with the bank during all the paperwork stuff and how crappy they were being. I really still believe he is the reason that the bank approved a new roof for the house (bank-owned) that they first denied.

our city we are in isnt in his area of specialty, however he made it his priority to really know what was out there for us.
he comes with my highest of recommendations.

  • We bought a house in Cottage Grove and worked with Karen Schmidt of Edina Realty.  She was available whenever we needed her and did a great job helping us find our first home.  I would highly recommend her.

Butting in and a bit off topic, but I would definitely add Woodbury to your list of cities - it'd be my first pick of all the cities that you listed.

  • We worked with Melanie Willy of Edina Realty.  I highly recommend her.  http://willyteam.com/  We bought in South Minneapolis, but she mostly focuses on southern suburbs, and her office is in Eagan.  (And she lives in Eagan.)
