So last year for Christmas the in-laws got us a gift card to a restaurant. They're out here visiting right now and decided they wanted to go to this restaurant for lunch. So they asked if we had used the gift card yet and we said no, so they decided let's all go to lunch and use your gift card. I find this weird because it was a gift from them, so why did they expect us to use it to buy their lunch? So we pay for lunch and you can't use the gift card for the tip, so I would have expected them to leave the tip. But nope, we had to leave the tip too.
So this gift card that could have bought us two nice meals only has $25 left on it now, which certainly won't cover another trip because it's one of those $20 just for a sandwich kind of places. So we have to go back again and spend more of our money on top of the gift card to be able to use the rest.
Am I wrong in thinking it's weird to ask someone to use a gift you gave them to buy your lunch?
Re: Is this weird?
Not right at all! I would be so annoyed!
NOT AT ALL!!! Super shady and kinda mooch-y of them, fo sho! And for them to not even leave a tip!?!?
Well I guess in the future, you know to tell them that yes, you have used the giftcard to "_____" that they gave you.
Crazy.
That sounds like something my ILs would do.
But maybe they were thinking that since it's been almost a year, you weren't planning on using it at all? And so they figured they might as well get some use out of it? Or maybe they're thinking that since they were the ones who originally paid for the GC, "they" were the ones who bought lunch?
I dunno, ILs are strange.
YES!
Honestly, I probably wouldn't still have the gift card. Bud if I did it would probably be because I wasn't a huge fan of the place, therefore I wouldn't care about using it to buy them lunch.
I would be annoyed about the tip. Probably more so about not being able to use the gift card to pay the tip. It's suppose to be like cash, why wouldn't you be able to use the gift card. Even so I wouldn't have a probably paying for it though b/c my in-laws do a lot for us.
I get your point, but I think it's more odd that you hadn't used the gift yet
.
We hadn't used it because it's not that close to us and it's mad traffic to get there. Yesterday it took us over an hour. And we really wanted to go for lunch because they have buffalo burgers, but they aren't open for lunch on Sunday. For some reason anytime we thought to go there, it was of course a Sunday and we missed the boat yet again.
