Weird question: old toilet seat?

My husband just replaced our toilet seat, because it was getting a little dingy (paint chipping, etc.).  I feel guilty throwing the old toilet seat in the garbage can--it's structurally sound, just... cosmetically-impaired.  But the idea of donating a used toilet seat is a little "ew".  Does anyone even take used toilet seats??

I did a quick search online, but all I can find is suggestions for arts and crafts projects--like painting your toilet seat and making a picture frame out of it.  Ummm... I think I'll pass....

Any suggestions for "green" disposal options??  Or should it just go out with the garbage?

Re: Weird question: old toilet seat?

  • I have no idea. Could you paint it and use it again?

I need to replace ours because the metal hinges are flaking/rusting. I was just going to trash it. I figure I make an effort to do the right thing, but some things just can't be repurposed. Or maybe I'm not creative/diligent enough?

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too--that toilet seats fall fall into the "just toss it" category.  I think in theory I could probably refinish it and reuse it, but... that just seems like an awful lot of work for a toilet seat. And since I'm in grad school and my free-time is limited (i.e. non-existant), refinishing toilet seats just...isn't going to happen right now.

But I figured before throwing it in the trash, I'd do a quick check to ease my guilty conscience :)

  • Well, I personally wouldn't want an old toilet seat, but I suppose if I didn't have the money and had a run down house and my toilet seat broke that I would be grateful for a used, usable toilet seat, even if it were ugly. Of course I would sanitize it well before introducing my bottom to it or sticking my face near it to throw up. After all, people (generally) don't replace toilet seats when they buy houses, so this is really the same thing.

So, having said that, I would post of freecycle. You might be surprised!

Thanks for the suggestion--I always forget about freecycle...
