Colony Collapse Disorder

It looks like researchers might have found the cause of CCD in bee hives.  I'm glad that they might be on to something so they can help the bees.  : )

Re: Colony Collapse Disorder

  • Ah... well my first reaction was 'oh great!!' but then I read the article. Now I imagine big pharma getting involved in bee meds. Well no matter what, hopefully this is good news for bees!

  • Hopefully this is good news.  Maybe now we can figure out some way to help them.  I think #1 on our list has to be to stop shuttiling bees around the country on semi-trucks, forcing them to pollinating field after field after field.  I'm sure that stress isn't helping with fighting off the fungus/virus.

There already is bee medicine for certain things, like mites. It goes in the hive but the bees don't ingest it. I'm sure it's not great, though, since it smells terrible and toxic.

We tried to stay away from it, but our hive became infested with mites (and wax moths) so we had to resort to using it. Hopefully next year we'll be able to prevent those things without meds.

  • helio, you have a bee hive? How cool! Do you collect honey?

supergreen, I would think that moving them around also increases the spread.

We do have a hive, but we are just getting started so we won't have honey until next year. We want to give the bees time to establish themselves well before we start taking honey from them.

DH does most of the work with it because I am still scared. It's all mental!

We don't live in a city, but a fairly urban suburb (if that makes any sense). We have a very small yard, but they are tucked away behind some shrubs right next to our house and the neighbors have no idea which makes it feel like a little subversive and adds to the fun. They are so fascinating to watch.

A neighbor has two hives and got a ton of honey this year.

I'm so jealous!  I would love to have a hive, but that'll have to wait until we have a house.  : )  I remember my dad agreeing to keep a few hives at our house when I was growing up, but we never did anything with them.  The person who owned the hives took care of collecting the honey, making sure that the colonies were healthy, etc and gave us honey now and then.

I hope that there is a way we can help them without screwing things up even worse.  They're so cute, and so neat to watch and learn about.
