Cell phone coverage and prepaid simcards in San Diego

Can anyone please tell me which company has the best cell phone coverage around the UCSD area?

From my research it appears to be Verizon but any help in this regard would be much appreciated.

Is it possible to buy a prepaid sim card with phone credits from the company?

Also any advice on where to buy it from?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Cell phone coverage and prepaid simcards in San Diego

  • I don't know about buying a prepaid SIM from the phone companies, but I have an H2O (aka O2) prepaid SIM that I use when I'm in the US.  They sell them at Best Buy, and then I can just recharge it online before my trip.  I'm not sure about their coverage in San Diego, but I've used them in Chicago, Houston, and Indianapolis, and their coverage seemed pretty average for US cell service.  I think the SIM card cost $9.99, and the $29.99 recharge gives you $70 worth of service (it just expires sooner than the regular $19.99 recharge).

  • Thank you GillC. We've never been to mainland USA before so all this is new to us.

I'm still astonished by how few prepaid options there are.  Especially if you want to use your own phone!  Since (I think) all the phone companies still like to lock their phones into one service provider, most of the prepaid options still seem to mean buying an actual phone!  I've gotten some pretty weird looks when I tell people I just want the SIM to use in my own phone!

  • I went to school there and we still work in the area. Verizon is the best coverage and there are several Verizon stores there that can help you with your questions...great customer service. I don't know the answers to prepaid sim card question. But i can tell you that San Diego is a large city and has pretty good coverage from most carriers, but we do have Verizon and find it to not drop our calls like Sprint would. And At & T is the worst offender for dropped calls in the area.
  • Sarahbear, thank you so much for that. I was hoping that someone could give me that sort of feedback.
  • One problem, Verizon is CDMA not GSM so they do not use SIM cards.   ATT & T-Mobile are the mainstream US companies that use SIM cards.   (I don't know if Boost & Criket use sims or not).

Thats only if you are one of the iSheep that has an iPhone!  I've been with AT&T for 12 years and I  get reception all over San Diego and I don't get dropped calls.  I sometimes even luck out and can still connect with AT&T when I'm down in Tijuana.

Prepaid SIM cards are pretty rare in the US but our prepaid cell phones can be very cheap and you can buy them almost anywhere.

How long are you going to be in town?  Unless you plan on using your phone all the time it can be cheaper to just add an international plan onto your phone and just pay the roaming fees.

We not only had to switch from AT&T, but they even refunded us the "cancellation fee" because even AT&T admitted San Diego is one of their worst areas for dropped calls and there was nothing they were going to do to fix it.  And this was before iphones came out.  I'd stick with Sarahbear's Verizon suggestion.  We have Tmobile and I have fine service around UTC (UCSD area), but I can only compare it with the AT&T service we previously had.
