Planting bulbs while my annuals are still in...advice

Hey girls. I'd like to plant a tons of tulips for the spring time. I still have impatiens in my flower beds as a border and they look fabulous still (it hasn't gotten too cold yet). Should I take them out to plant the tulip bulbs OR should I just plans the tulip bulbs underneath the impatiens blooms, then tear the impatiens out when they die in the first frost?

TIA!

  • What zone are you in? I normally pull up my annuals and then plant my bulbs. After planting the bulbs, I plant pansies. You could always buy one of these to plant bulbs. I think it would give you minimal disturbance to your annuals.

  • Sorry, forgot that! Zone 6!
  • If I were you, considering your zone, I'd go ahead and pull out the annuals now. You still have a couple of weeks of decent temps before the first frost (we get a frost around early Nov here.) If you want fall color, I'd go ahead and plant the pansies so that they get a few weeks in before the frost. I planted pansies last week so that they'd have some time to get established before the cooler weather gets here.
