Cheap Cell Phone Plans

Does anyone have a cheap cell phone plan?  I'm hoping to find one around $30 a month.  I don't talk on the phone much so would need around 500 minutes and would like unlimited texting.  I don't need anything else, no internet or pix or whatever other options there may be.  Also, DH and I can't bundle our services together because his phone is through work.

We are also looking into cheap home internet and home phone options.  So if you know of a good bundle, that'd work!

So far I have found:

-$35 a month through Verizon using my corporate discount, need to sign a 2 year contract, don't have to buy a phone, 450 anytime min, free nights/weekends, unlimited texting

-$50 a month through Boost Mobile, no contract, have to buy a phone (around $150), unlimited min, text, data, everything but email -more than I need but wondering if it is worth the extra $15 a month?

-$30 a month through Straight Talk (through Wal-Mart Ick!), no contract, have to buy a phone ($50-100), 1000 min, 1000 texts, 30MB data, not sure how the service is through this carrier

Re: Cheap Cell Phone Plans

  • Well, for home phone, we have Magicjack, which was $40 for the first year (b/c you need to buy the VOIP doo-dad) and $20 for the years after.  As long as my computer isn't being dysfunctional, it works really well.  THe only downfall is that if your computer isn't on, the phone isn't on... but for us that's not a problem b/c my desktop is always on.  But if it isn't on, it just goes to VM, so if someone wants to get a hold of you they can always leave a message and you can get your messages through your email.

This sounds pretty cool, but I'm not sure it would work for us.  We have a home phone so that in emergencies we will always have a phone that works and don't have to rely that our cell phones are charged (since my typically is dead).  Since our computer isn't always on this wouldn't work in the event of a late night emergency.  But thanks for telling me about.  Never had heard of that before!
