digging up bulbs

Most bulbs love a good winter, but my gladiolas and dahlias say to dig them up before frost and store them inside until spring.

It's still warm out, but our usual frost date is fast approaching. I've never done this before, so I have some questions:

What do I do with the leaves? Do I just cut them off? Also, do I stick the bulbs in a paper bag? Will they be fine in the garage, or do I literally have to bring them inside?

Re: digging up bulbs

  • dig them up after a light frost kills the tops.  cut off the stems. brush off excess dirt, do not wash. air dry a day. some say don't let tubers touch each other and pack in spagnum moss or peat moss in a box or paper bag.  a garage in indiana will probably be too cold, you don't want them to freeze but you do want them to stay cold.  we store ours (MA) in a crawl space under an addition. google for a ton of ino.
  • What zone are you in?

I'm in zone 5 and my glads and dahlias have survived winters in ground just fine.

  • I'm in zone 5b, in Indianapolis to be specific.

It can get as low as 20 below zero during nights in January.

I really don't want to dig them up, and they were all gifts, so it's not like I'm out a huge investment if I leave them in. I just would feel like a mean gardener to let them die in the cold.
