Does anyone else have insulin resistance with PCOS?

I have to admit being a little put off and overwhelmed with The Bump's message boards hence why I'm posting this here. Just wanted to know if any of you have either one of these and if so, how did it affect your chances of conceiving, if at all? Or if you have any advice for trying to conceive when dealing with either issue, that would be great, too!

Re: Does anyone else have insulin resistance with PCOS?

  • We're having trouble with my cycles lately, and honestly there's a chance it's PCOS.  We go to the doc on Friday, so we'll find out more.  The ladies over on GP on the Nest have been really helpful, and I hear that it's not as snarky as the Bump.
  • :: raises hand ::

    i was on metformin, then glumetza, then byetta before TTC trying to regulate my cycles, which worked.  got me ovulating every cycle but we tried for a year before moving on to treatments.  i also have stage II endo, which is mild/moderate.

    my ob did clomid (7 rounds), which wasn't ideal with PCOS - i would have multiple follicles but no success.

    another year past, first IUI was with clomid and failed.  we moved on to an RE who put us on injectables (gonal-f) instead of oral stims, and that worked for us.

  • @MikeandRachel- I certainly hope its not at serious as PCOS and that it's something that can be easily fixed. Keep me posted! PCOS is a constant battle for me and the medication is another whole story..but good luck and I hope whatever your doctor decides to do, that it works quickly for you guys!

    @Allinduetime-Wow! You've had such a journey with it! Glad to see you with twins though! Atleast I know it's possible! Definitely gives me hope! What all did your reproductive endo do for you guys aside from switch the meds?? I'd like to see one but call me dumb, is an RE different than a regular endocrinologist?

  • yup, an RE deals specifically with endocrinology as it relates to reproduction.  his one and only job is to get you pregnant.  my regular endocrinologist just treated the medical aspect of it when i wasn't pregnant.

    the RE reviewed over every.little.thing.  labwork, ultrasounds, etc.  my thyroid was borderline hypo - still within normal range to a regular endo, but he said it may have affected things.  my DHEA (i think) was also normal range but was on the high end, so i did a round of steroids to bring it to a lower level.  basically, everything that looked normal to a regular doctor, he was able to scrutinize and tweak here and there to get everything "more" normal, if that makes sense.

    i don't know how it all works, but he took into account my bloodwork values and my ultrasounds to determine the best course of treatment.  i was very lucky that my OB was very proactive when it came to using clomid - most OB's throw it around like candy and don't do any monitoring (bloodwork, ultrasounds, etc.).  if i would not have had the strict monitoring, the RE wouldn't have had a clue how i truly responded.  he was able to see the ultrasound pics of the measured follicles, the appropriate blood levels on specific days, and determine the change of course that needed to happen.  if i wouldn't have had all the monitoring, we basically would have been back at square one.

  • Wow! Well that makes a lot of sense. It all seems so complicated! Good to know that I'm not the only one with issues in that department! I know my regular doctor has been telling me I need to see an endocrinologist for a while now. As of yet, I've just been seeing my regular OBGYN for my PCOS and Insulin Resistance...I'm thinking that if we aren't pregnant by the end of the year though, I'll definitely start looking around for recommendations for a RE and a regular endocrinologist.
  • we've been working with my amazing obgyn. we've done 3 rounds of clomid, hsg that revealed a possible blocked tube, numerous ultrasounds and bloodwork. i actually just went in today for bloodwork to test for insulin resistance. if it turns out that i am, she's going to put me on metformin. we're going to the RE she referred me to in january if nothing works. She referred us to Dr. Bobby Webster. He's supposed to be awesome. Good luck to you! I'm glad there are others on this board that has or is in the same boat!

  • Thanks Amanda and good luck to you too! Keep us posted on your progress and I'll keep that doctor in mind!
